Fire damages Atlantic City Steel Pier and Marine Ballroom

A general alarm fire swept the Steel Pier in Atlantic City on a windy Saturday night, destroying the Marine Ballroom and the water circus. Police say the blaze began near the ballroom, started around 6:15 p.m., and was controlled by 8 p.m. Debris fell into the ocean as firefighters contained the flames driven by shifting winds. The 85 year old pier, owned by George A. Hamid, hosts three theatres and has suffered prior damage from storms and fires.
