Gemini 7 commanders Frank Borman and James Lovell Jr. return to Earth after a 330 hour mission with 206 orbits and 5 129 400 miles logged. They land 126 miles from the carrier amid cheers, undergo medical checks, and plan a Christmas with families before briefings and a Cape Kennedy return.
NASA reports Gemini 6 and 7 completed most goals including long flights EVA and docking attempts. Future missions Gemini 8 to 12 will test advanced rendezvous and spacewalks, aiming for Apollo lunar landing by 1969.
The La Crosse United Fund exceeded its goal with $275 054 subscribed, surpassing the $272 844 target and a 4.1 percent rise from last year. Campaign co chairmen Kenneth Dahl and Ralph Steele praised firms like Trane Allis Chalmers G Heileman Northern States Power La Crosse Garment Riviera Sportswear La Crosse Cooler and Dairyland Power Cooperative. Robert Waller welcomed contributors and noted many firms exceeded prior giving. Special thanks went to pace setting firms including WKBH WKBT La Crosse Tribune Wm Doerflinger Co J C Penney Co Trane Allis Chalmers and Northern States Power. The annual United Fund meeting will be Jan 26 in the Mississippi Room at Holiday Lanes.
Viet Cong fired three mortar rounds into Cho Lon near Saigon's heartless business district just before midnight Saturday. Heavy automatic fire followed as authorities reported no casualties and noted the attack came hours after a dusk to dawn curfew for U.S. personnel. A grenade targeted a mobile police post near a U.S. billet but caused no injuries.
Prof Giorgio la Pira and Prof Mario Primicerio said Ho Chi Minh told them in Hanoi he would meet anyone to negotiate for peace but did not demand U.S. troop withdrawal as a precondition. The pair urged caution over U.S. disclosure of the peace hint, while Hanoi denied the claim as fabrication.
President Johnson sent praise letters to the four rendezvous in space astronauts and announced that three will receive military promotions. Walter Schirra remains a Navy captain, while James Lovell, Frank Borman, and Thomas Stafford are slated for Navy captain, Air Force colonel, and Air Force lieutenant colonel respectively. Moyers noted Johnson watched Gemini 7’s reentry on TV and did not plan personal meetings.
Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier invites astronaut James A. Lovell to visit his hometown for a reunion and Gemini 7 celebration. Space officials say no trip decisions will be made until after Christmas debriefing. Lovell grew up in Milwaukee, attended Solomon Juneau High School, and now resides near Houston with Marilyn Gerlach Lovell.
United Auto Workers Local 833 approved a one year contract with Kohler Co by a 428 to 17 vote. Kohler plans to pay 4.5 million dollars in back wages and pensions to about 1,400 former strikers as part of the settlement.
Havana Radio reports the Luz hotel in the old Havana waterfront collapsed during the night. At least 11 dead and 25 others believed buried in rubble, with 13 treated for injuries as Cuban Red Cross aids survivors.
State Sen Richard Zaborski of Milwaukee announced he will run in 1966 for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor or state treasurer. The 38 year old has served in the Senate since 1955 and as minority leader since 1963. He plans a statewide swing before choosing his target and co chairs a committee supporting Lt Gov Patrick Lucey for governor.
