Tiny monkey rides rocket to edge of space and is lost

A one pound monkey named Gordo rode an Army Jupiter nose cone to about 300 miles up and vanished into the Atlantic after a missile mission from Cape Canaveral. Recovery failed and the Army halted the search six hours later. Data from the seven minute flight showed mild physiological changes and a period of weightlessness lasting about 500 seconds.

Thomson Buys Home In West Madison

Gov Vernon Thomson purchases a home on Madison west side amid speculation he may stay in the city after his term ends. He previously practiced law in Richland Center and has not announced future plans or interest in a federal post. The house sits in the Thomson family neighborhood near the governor's mansion.

County Fared Better Than Most During Business Dip

New figures show La Crosse County with stronger 1957 58 performance than many areas. Personal income declined in late 1957 but rose in early 1958 due to unemployment insurance payments and federal pensions. County net income reached 138.846 million for the year, with per household spendable income above national and state levels. Retail sales totaled 101.15 million, up from 96.56 million the prior year as buyer confidence improved and debt declined.

Milwaukee Man Rescues Six Holloway Children From Fire

Herbert Green woke to screams at 12 55 a m and carried the infant from a Holloway home fire to safety. He aided Rosemary Hollo way eight Ruby and Bovine five Franchie Jr eight Darleen two and Victrene infant. Fire Chief Canavan said the blaze started in a first floor room from a defective oil heater. Damage estimated at 1500 dollars.

Chicago Apartment Fire Kills Three Tenants

A four story Chicago apartment fire early Saturday killed three tenants and injured seven others. The owner, Sam Weiss, identified the deceased as Frank Jackowski age 45 Miss Julia Rollinski and Stanley Bedicki both about 70. Frank Borgatz was listed in critical condition among the injured.

Fireman Dies After Fixing Tire At Police Station

John Mulligan a 49 year old veteran firefighter in McKeesport Pennsylvania died of a heart attack after volunteering to help a mother with a flat tire at the police station prior to Christmas. The act followed a helper’s request from Sgt William Kreiling.
