Forrestal Supercarrier Launched Amid Jet Crash
Newport News Va Saturday the United States launched the Forrestal the largest warship in the navy despite a fighter jet crash during the ceremony The 59 600 ton carrier was christened by Mrs James Forrestal widow of the first defense secretary Navy Secretary Charles Thomas called the ship a weapon of great potency and said its threat to shorelines cannot be ignored The ship keel was laid in 1952 at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock and will be towed to an outfitting pier for completion before joining the fleet
