Death Ray Weapon Being Developed at Martin Co Plant

Dr. Carl L. Kober of Martin Co outlines a space tested death ray to be ready for 1963. The device would emit a beam over 100000 degrees, heat and evaporate targets via concentrated solar energy, powered by nuclear energy, about the size of a large searchlight and weighing 30000 pounds. On earth its range would be under a mile, in space 50 to 200 miles, impractical for terrestrial use. The Air Force may use it to police near earth, officials in Washington declined comment.

Janitor's Fired Effort Linked to Hartford Hospital Fire

Hartford investigators traced the blaze to a trash chute between the main floor and basement but could not determine a cause. Janitor Arthur LaFontaine said he spotted the fire between 1 25 and 2 p m and fought it alone for about 10 minutes after grabbing a hose near the cashier's office. The disaster killed 15 people as the hospital began returning to normal operations.

Three Wisconsin Tax Reform Paths Face Uncertainty

Wisconsin lawmakers continue to wrestle with tax reform as three main options remain. Gov. Nelson could win partial Democratic backing to revive a selective sales tax and income tax increase with GOP coalition support. The Republican assembly may push a general three percent sales tax without income tax hikes. A stalemate could force a referendum while interim measures, likely higher personal income surtaxes, ease deficits.

The La Crosse Tribune has sold 838 of 1 000 copies of Jenkin Lloyd Jones who is tampering with the soul of America. an additional printing was ordered. Allen E Schraumnagel of Elroy Kendall Wilton Schools requested 80 copies for teachers. Mrs J R Richter ordered 125 copies for Speech Class 101 at La Crosse State College, with 25 kept in textbook form.

Boy Killed On Way To Remind Santa Claus

Massena New York reports Freddie Downer seven was struck by a car while crossing a street to use a phone. He died in Watertown hospital after asking Santa for a bicycle for himself and a doll set for his three year old sister Vicky. He asked to leave his mother a new dress and included a plea not to forget his sister. His father is a patient at a state hospital.

Student Shot By E German Guards

East German guards shot a 20 year old Austrian student during a border crossing near Staaken as a group of youths and girls cut barbed wire. The body lay for over two hours. Dieter Woohlfahrt of the Free University of West Berlin died. Earlier, East Berlin fired on four West Berlin youths near Spandau. they escaped unharmed. Tass quoted Soviet accusations against US troop movements as a bid to escalate tensions in Europe.

Excellent seasonal shopping despite snow at La Crosse stores

A survey of La Crosse merchants shows an excellent feel for the Christmas season, with December sales near or above 1960 levels. Weather strained Friday to Saturday traffic as out of town shoppers stayed away, but several firms reported strong color for Friday and improving weekend trade.

Sharp Drop Seen In Temperatures

A powerful low pressure system from the southern plains moved into the Great Lakes bringing Wisconsin its first heavy snowfall. Snow drifts up to six inches appeared on highways as temperatures were expected to plunge to zero after a blast of cold air from the Canadian Rockies. The heaviest snowfall was forecast from La Crosse to Green Bay with Milwaukee expecting six inches and more than four inches expected north of that line.

Nike Zeus Succeeds In Low Flight

Nike Zeus antimissile rocket scored a complete success in a low altitude Pacific range test at Point Mugu California. The 48 foot solid fuel missile flew to about 40000 feet before bending westward almost parallel to the ocean, marking a tougher, lower flight than prior high altitude tests. A three stage firing was also successful last week at White Sands New Mexico.
