In Rome on a 19 day tour, President Eisenhower works as a goodwill ambassador despite heavy rain. He toured the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, greeted by cheering Rome crowds, and kept a grueling schedule with an audience with Pope John XXIII before heading to Ankara. A La Crescent fisherman is missing after distress calls heard across the Mississippi near Isle la Plume. Robert Drexel’s boat is missing though his car was found in Houska Park as police, La Crosse and Houston county officials joined a multi jurisdictional search beginning at 5:15 p.m. Reports said Drexel fished in Dam Slough across from Houska Park.
At an air show in Palm Desert California two Beechcraft planes collided. Five people were killed including four aboard the twin engine Beechcraft with the tail section sheared off. One occupant of the single engine Beechcraft was also killed and another was hospitalized in critical condition.
