The Rose Street Viaduct may be rebuilt and widened in 1955 with state and federal funds. Since 1884 the project sparked council actions to protect school children, led to a wooden bridge, and saw repeated orders for a new structure as the old viaduct deteriorated.
La Crosse County takes Burlie Dobson trophy for the third time in junior fair swine at the Wisconsin State Fair earning permanent possession. Judges praise the meatiest hogs among the nine counties. County exhibitors tally 34 blue ribbons plus nine in group classes.
La Crosse polio drive at Po lio Park Cameron Park at 5th and King entered its second night with $9,010.03 on the total by 10 p.m. Organizers aim for a $15,000 goal as contributions via carriers and park collections continue. Contingent reports from Saturday will be added Monday.
Gov Allan Shivers led Ralph Yarborough in the Texas runoff as returns from 62 counties showed Shivers ahead by 50 534 votes 400 909 to 350 375 with 155 of 254 counties reporting official said the trend remained favorable for Shivers in the conservative Democrat contest aided by Eisenhower backing.
Federal Housing Administrator Albert M. Cole announced decisive action to compel repayment of windfall profits from government guaranteed mortgage loans. Sidney Larner of Linwood Park Inc. was ordered to remove directors within 10 days. FHA will appoint new ones. Windfalls totaled 2.43 million on Linwood Park, with loans of 8.88 million against a project cost of 6.66 million.
Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey urged American Legion leaders at the National Security Commission meeting to keep pressing Congress for Universal Military Training. He noted Congress pledged UMT in 1951 but has not enacted peacetime training law, and urged the Legion to push for a concrete reserve-forces plan. War ren Atherton urged timely demand to Congress next January.
District Attorney John Bosshard announced the Evelyn Hartley reward fund expires September 1. The fund exceeds 6600 dollars and seeks any information from western Wisconsin to nationwide to help solve the disappearance of Evelyn Hartley on October 24. Witness clues include a jacket and tennis shoes linked to the Rasmusens' home and the crime lab has related these items to the abduction.

Cpl. Claude J. Batchelor 22 of Kermit a former prisoner of war in North Korea will be tried at Ft. Sam Houston by general court martial on charges including aiding the enemy and misconduct as a prisoner. The case follows Batchelor's 31 months as a POW and his New Year’s Day return after staying with Communist captors.
