Two Women and Man Drown in Lansing River Crash
In Lansing Iowa two of three drowning victims were recovered and a frogman nearly died during the rescue. Leon Marlow 74 and Mrs Gilbert Rosendahl 70 of Burr Oak Iowa and Dave Thompson 70 of Decorah Iowa were in a small flat bottom boat struck by a tugboat and four barges on the Mississippi. Marlow and Thompson bodies were recovered Friday and Saturday respectively near the accident site. Mrs Rosendahl’s body was found beneath a barge by diver Larry Eldridge but came up only the lifejacket. frogman Earl Miller freed himself after becoming entangled and surfaced exhausted. Continuous salvage work was halted by the coast guard and Sheriff Rumph. Mrs Marlow survived by surfacing and was treated for shock. The river bend near Lansing remains the site of the tragedy as authorities continue recovery efforts.
