A federal judge rejected forced busing for Detroit students this fall and handed desegregation duties back to the city school board. NAACP leader Lawrance Washington voiced disappointment as board president C L Golightly framed the ruling as a victory for the district.

Last Man Club Reunion Awaits Final Farewell Toast
In La Crosse Wisconsin eight remaining members of the Last Man Club gathered for a weekend reunion celebrating veterans of Co M 3rd Wisconsin Infantry later Co C 121st Machine Gun Battalion 32nd Division. Joe Brabant 76 youngest present recalled a 33 year service record spanning Army Navy and Air Force. The group marked memories and a planned farewell toast with a protected Cognac bottle gifted by France and kept for the last survivor.

The First Federal Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps of La Crosse finished fifth at the Drum Corps International final in Philadelphia Wisconsin with a season high 87.5 points. Madison Scouts won with 92.5 as Santa Clara Van Guards Blue Devils and others followed under overcast skies to a crowd of 18 000 to 20 000.

Want To Build A Cheap Airport? Hillsboro's Ray Knower
Ray mond Knower head of Kickapoo Oil Co sought and obtained airport improvements with county and city aid at bargain rates. Vernon County paved a 3600 by 50 foot runway and parking, the city leased and then sold city land for a hangar and heliport, and Knower received a buffer strip gift. Total charges were 16 675 dollars with no bids for paving. He later sold the airport to banker William Jirschele and the adjacent parcel to Warner Creek Cheese for a few thousand dollars. Knower defended taxpayer participation as normal business support.
