The dedication of the Mary E Saw yer Auditorium shifts to Oct 2 to avoid a conflict with the Western Wisconsin Retail Food Dealers Assn banquet on Oct 9. Gov Kohler and Mayor Knutson will speak. parade Oct 1 and a 2 pm dedication program on Oct 2 with committees named.
Tearful embraces and happy smiles marked reunions as 11 U S fliers returned from 32 months in Red China. Air force planes carried most of the men to wives and families, while Daniel C Schmidt did not board and faced a tense Nevada City meeting with his wife. Capt Eugene J Vandi reunited with his parents and two children at Griffiths Air Force Base New York before resting with his family. Capt John Buck greeted his parents in Tennessee and was moved to tears. Airman Harry Benjamin Jr. embraced his wife in South Dakota as the crowd watched paths home. The scene closed with families awaiting the next wave of reunions and questions lingering about Schmidt and his wife.
Lt Gen William H Arnold will assume command of the 5th Army in Chicago with date to be announced. Maj Gen Phillip D Ginder will command temporarily until Arnold arrives from Austria and Ginder stays as deputy 5th Army commander. Arnold led island campaigns in the Pacific and commanded the American division in the Philippines before joining the occupation forces in Japan.
The Common Council plans to discuss a citizen committee reapportionment proposal on Tuesday night. The plan keeps 21 aldermen but redraws ward boundaries, aims to equalize ward populations, and may move current incumbents to different wards with terms expiring in 1957. A committee meeting precedes the session, and Oct is targeted for passage.
Washington and London welcomed the Soviet move to reduce manpower by 640000 by Dec 15 but questioned verification and possible Western pressure to cut Allied forces. British officials urged disclosure of total strength, noting the decision signals possible East West rapprochement after Geneva. Estimates place remaining troops above four million.

La Crosse prepares for 1955 56 term with Catholic elementary schools Aquinas High School and Lutheran schools opening September 6. Public schools begin September 7. Vocational School Holy Cross Seminary Viterbo College and La Crosse State College schedule registrations September 7 8 12 with class openings September 8 15 1955.
New York is paralyzed by hurricane Connie with winds up to 67 miles an hour and 10 to 13 inches of rain. Eleven deaths occur in blinding rain and electrocutions. Flooded streets, toppled trees, and long outages affect millions while emergency crews restore power and traffic gradually resumes.
The Coulee Crossword Puzzle announces no winners for the current contest with prize $475. Mrs J R Bolton of La Crescent Minnesota missed one word on puzzle No 15 by using novice instead of notice, Carlton Jacobson of Waterville provides the correction.
Puzzle fans vie for 475 dollars with 16 multiple choice items on No 16. Marion Jacobson of Westby misfired on 22 across and left a blank on 20 down. Maude Cornell of Viroqua says she has to win this time after using up all cards. Mary Halverson of Redfield Street submitted a record 147 entries.
The La Crosse County Industrial Development Council completed its membership. Notable appointees include Franklin Pamperin as city representative, Gordon H. Feinberg as temporary chairman, and ex officio appointees Paul Hartwig Zenno Gorder Fred Steele and George Thompson Jr. A September orientation and potential drafting of a constitution and by laws were discussed.
Fair conditions expected Sunday with little temperature change. Highs near 85 degrees. Winds light and skies mostly sunny with no precipitation anticipated.
The city will present a condemnation petition Sept 13 at 2 p.m. in County Court to acquire five properties near the new auditorium for a parking lot. A 20 day waiting period follows publication over three weeks, with impaneling 36 jurors and potential appointment of three commissioners to assess value.
Federal Labor Union 18558 and Machinists Lodge 1115 rejected The Trane Co wage proposal in separate Saturday meetings at the Vocational School. Ballots showed 1081 against and 66 for the package. Lodge 1115 also voted no. Mediation official W H Burtz expected to resume talks soon. The package included holiday time, insurance, pension, and a three year contract with annual wage increases.
The Norwegian motorship Tancred reported two dead and four injured in an engine room explosion 100 miles west of San Francisco. One injured man was near death and three others were seriously burned as the Coast Guard rushed aid.
The La Crosse Tribune will debut a daily front page cartoon "Notes on The News" starting Monday. The humorous double-take at the day’s events will replace the former front page feature "Good Evening."
