The Kokomo Morn Times reports an emergency edition produced with local cooperation as a tornado approached. Staff observed multiple black and white twisters nearby, some touching the ground, power failed, and reporters were dispatched to towns, police, hospitals, and communication centers.
A destructive tornado outbreak struck southwest Howard County and surrounding towns Sunday evening. Widespread damage occurred in Alto Greentown Maple Crest Russiaville and Kokomo with at least ten killed and many injured. Emergency services mobilized including National Guard and Bunker Hill AFB crews while hospitals confessed they were overwhelmed by injured residents.
Five people are confirmed dead with many injured after a tornado struck Greentown around 8 p.m. Sunday. Eastern High School coach Jim Calaway described narrowly avoided tragedy as his family hid in a basement near the ruins and mourned the loss.
