Local MSTS Employee Survives Jet Crash

Kodiak man Alvin T. Pickett and Lt. Donald B. Parry survived a fiery F-94 crash on Kodiak Naval Station runway at 10 33 Wednesday night. Parry suffered head injuries and smoke inhalation while Pickett endured four fractured vertebrae. both were removed from serious condition as fire crews extinguished flames and a board of officers from Anchorage prepared to investigate.

New Secretary For Chamber Replaces Resident Officer

Mrs. William Smith was elected by the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday to fill the unexpired term of Mrs. James Martz who resigned due to irregular attendance. A special directors meeting is set for Wednesday at 7 pm at J. G. Martz’s home. Maurice Briggs reported on improving mail delivery from plane to post office and noted a postal inspector’s recent visit. Miss Lilian Morris flew to Anchorage for special medical attention.

School Enrolment Shows Increase Across Grades

Enrolment at end of first week reaches 350 for both grade and high school, up from 333 last year. Elementary totals 281 versus 278 previous year, while 1952-53 high school total is 69, up from 55. Freshman gains 34 compared with 16 last year. High school by class lists Sophomore 16 Juniors 12 Seniors 7. Eight grades totals listed, with per-grade figures and note on Paul Swanson on vacation.

Canadian Ship Sinks Near Juneau Sinks Near Juneau

Canadian Pacific Lines flagship Princess Kathleen sank 18 miles north of Juneau after striking a cliff. All 425 aboard were rescued or ashore. 118 crew and officers were saved after an abandon ship order. Salvage potential exists but economic feasibility is questioned. wreck lies in 90 feet of water with stern 180 feet below. An inquiry was scheduled.

Housing Engineer Returns to Kodiak After Juneau Meetings

Francis Ginther of Aleutian Homes Inc. returned to Kodiak from Juneau where he conferred with APW head Donald Wilson on the housing area water and sewer project. Bids for the project will be advertised within the next three weeks, Mayor Lee C. Bettinger said yesterday.
