Betty Kizer Crowned Queen of Kodiak 1948

Betty Kizer, a Kodiak high school senior, crowned Queen of Kodiak 1948 after a Monday ceremony at the Community Center. She received a jeweled crown and royal robe, plus a round trip to Seattle with Alaska Airlines, while the runner up Betty Combs won the alternate prize.

Chamber Delegate To Attend CAB Hearing

The Chamber of Commerce will send a delegate to the CAB hearings in Anchorage next month regarding non scheduled airlines. A study of the non scheduled airlines will be made before the delegate is sent. The Chamber asked the city council to consider collecting freight at the Kodiak dock. Maurice Briggs, postmaster, spoke at the meeting outlining new low parcel post rates.

New Alaska Parcel Rates Cut Shipping Costs

New low parcel post rates from Kodiak to Alaskan cities take effect tomorrow as parcel post zones are set. Regular U S fourth class rates apply in territory and air parcel post via Congress will apply to air mail parcels. Zones range from 2 for Kodiak area to 5 for remote ports with much cheaper rates for 5 and 10 pound parcels.

A judgment was entered in court this week ordering Mr and Mrs Harry Wallace to pay 8891 for back rent court costs and attorney fees to plaintiff Harry Pinch. Talmage L Smith acted as attorney for Pinch.

School Vote Praised for Broad Community Responsibility

Dr Dorothy Novatney territorial supervisor of education praised the independent school district idea as excellent for broader community responsibility. She noted sufficient territorial funds for fall salaries, no kindergarten in the program, and that first grade should be limited to 20 per class. Kodiak base and town schools total 313 in grade levels and 60 in high school with ten seniors.

Salmon Derby Opens In Kodiak With Cash Prizes

The Third Annual Kodiak Salmon Derby kicks off today in Kodiak and nearby waters. Open to all ages with a one dollar entry, the event runs today and Sunday with judging at Whiz Fish Company dock. Officials include Marcus Meyer ten Wade as chief clerk and judges Frank McConagh y Tiny Tesa'i Charles Skinner and Pete Hjelmeir.

George McKay Dies in Portland

George McKay a Kodiak resident for nearly two decades died Wednesday night in Portland Oregon after returning from a Bristol Bay fishing trip. Aged about 44 he had heart trouble and was hospitalized for three weeks. He came to Alaska in 1932 worked for Frank McConaghy at Kukak then settled in Kodiak. He worked at the base 1940 to 1943 and with Thompson Transfer one winter and was a Belmont partner with Jorgen Fredrickson for two years. He fished summers at Bristol Bay and is survived by a brother Perry McKay a sister Mrs Laura Hogan and three half sisters plus another half brother Don. He lived on Tagarard near the hospital.

The REA in Washington sent a letter detailing the agency position on the planned new generating project. The local REA board will meet Monday evening to review the correspondence. Elmer and Mrs. Dean plan to move to St Louis Missouri tonight after selling their Pilar Mountain home to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Anderson.

Kodiak Voters Approve District Incorporation

Kodiak residents approved incorporating the Kodiak Independent School District in Tuesday’s vote with 111 in favor and 17 against. An order of incorporation will be issued by the District Court soon, per attorney John C. Hughes. Top votegetters for the school board were John C. Hughes 106, William A. Stone 77, Eugene Marlar 75, Arthur Else 71, and Dr A Holmes Johnson 67. remaining candidates received 65 or fewer votes.

Harbor funds allocated for breakwater project

City and the Territory of Alaska have agreed to allocate 50 000 for a breakwater, pending War Department construction approval. The plan, confirmed by Victor C Rivers and Frank Metcalfe, awaits city council resolution and War Department permit before execution.
