Census Now Being Taken in Kodiak by Local Agent
Mrs Henry Neseth will conduct the business census of Kodiak as part of a nationwide count authorized by Congress. D T McMahon of Anchorage aids, training Neseth and outlining reports on gross business payroll and inventory for 1948. Final figures will be kept confidential but may be used to show total business in the Third Division and help assess competition. The census will be done by interviews and blank forms, and cooperation is requested from local businessmen.

Street Paving Is Resumed In City

Kodiak School Staff Dine with Russian Women Guests
Kodiak educators and a representative group of Kodiakians gathered Thursday night for a dinner hosted by the Russian women at the church. About sixty attendees heard from John Hughes president of the school district board who acted as master of ceremonies. Hughes introduced superintendent Lvor Schott who presented the teachers. Dr A Helmesa Johnson outlined plans for a new school and Gene Marlar spoke on the school board’s work in a brief follow up program.

C Of C Plans Two Events In Kodiak Paving Celebration
Kodiakians will hold a street festival with floodlights and dancing to celebrate the paving of the main street. A planning committee of four led by Ray Martin will organize the event, with Dorian Coogan Martin Jensen and Max La Lande assisting, and a band from the armed services may provide music. A big dinner with a surprise program is planned for Friday night September 16 at the Montmartre to raise interest and funds for a leaflet about Kodiak. Tickets are available from Gene Marlar.

Noted flier Bill Odom dies in Thompson Trophy crash
Cleveland report: Bill Odom, famed aviator, perished on the second lap when his P 51 crashed into a house near the course. The green racer, owned by Jacqueline Cochran, also killed a housewife and her one year old son in the tragedy incurring a grim loss for aviation authorities.
