Allies Gain Slightly As Reds Rebuild Forces
Allied troops won small gains on both ends of the 120 mile Korean front as North Korean forces rebuilt. U S Eighth Army said the Red drive toward Taegu with about 50,000 men petered out due to shortages and manpower. Reds reached seven miles from Taegu before a U S Cavalry Division and South Koreans halted the advance. Lake Success reports Russia failed to denounce a UN air strike in Korea after a Russian bomber was shot down near the 38th parallel.

Eight-Year-Old Falls From Dock in Icy Waters
Eight year old Tony Morri son of Mrs. Nona Parrott was fished from the Donnelley and Acheson dock after falling into the icy channel waters just before noon Thursday. Ed Higgins and Henry Neseth heard the cries and dove in to assist, with Jim McCormick helping bring Tony to safety. The boy, wet and cold, was placed to bed at home and mourned losing a pair of rubber boots in the fall. Ray Geiger, former owner of Geiger's Shoe Repair Shop, will leave Kodiak for Chicago to pursue a law degree.

Band Benefit Nets $600 for Kodiak Junior Band
The Kodiak Junior Band benefit dance raised about $600, with funds to buy instruments. Mrs Edna Lee Dixon coordinated arrangements and noted ongoing contributions to a junior band fund. Truman Apologizes for Marine Propaganda Remark
President Truman, in Washington, apologized for an earlier remark likening the Marine Corps to a Navy police force with a propaganda machine. He said he would correct mistakes and asked Marines to support him in pursuit of world peace. The Marines applauded. A total of 310 students enrolled in Kodiak public schools yesterday, says superintendent Ivor Schott. High school enrollment is 52 with nine seniors, grade school 258. Thirty five first graders entered. Classes start at 8 45 am Monday.
