Local interest is high in the delegate race between John Manders E L Bartlett and the incumbent Anthony Dimond. Kodiak residents Warren A Taylor and Robert H Chadwick seek seats in the house. City polls open 8 am at city hall and close 7 pm with candidate announcements elsewhere in the issue.

Dr and Mrs Jones have lived in Kodiak since 1938 and will move to Hood Canal district in Washington. The union may keep the property for a future doctor as the area loses its sole physician with Dr MacCalmont reassigned and Jones departure.

Enrollment Reaches 206 On Opening Day At Local School
Superintendent Harry Holt reported 206 students enrolled on opening day with kindergarten starting next Monday under Miss Bertha Thompson. Public Health Nurse Marian Curtis estimated 20 more in kindergarten, bringing total to 226, compared with 236 at six weeks last year. High school grades total 35, and the largest class is fifth with 29 students. A planned music and art teacher was dropped after Miss Valetta Hornshuh of Tacoma could not be released from her commitment there.

Tools Stolen From Window at Krafts Store
Military police found the front window of O. Kraft & Son department store broken shortly after 11 pm Tuesday. About $100 worth of tools on display were missing. An employee had visited the store 30 minutes before the loss was discovered. Fingerprints were taken. a report on them is awaited by the deputy US Marshal office.

Couple Sentenced After Falconer Apartments Shooting
Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Arbuckle were each sentenced to 180 days in federal jail after pleading guilty to being disorderly and discharging a firearm. Special US Commissioner Mary Gregoroff handed down the sentence following complaints of gunfire Wednesday night from the Falconer apartments where a newly bought .22 pistol was fired.

Cheechako Club Robbery Report In Alaska
Thieves entered the Cheechako Club between 1:30 am Monday and opening hours Monday, stealing about 620 dollars from a back window entry. Most loot came from a snoose carton of nickels plus 232 dollars in change from registers and 80 dollars in other coins. Tobacco and candy were untouched. tobacco pouches, billfolds, and pipes were taken from front displays. Discovery was at 8 20 am by Ted Wiley. Cannery Fire In Kodiak Destroys Half Million In Property
A Kodiak fire leveled the New England Fish Company cannery on the ocean dock destroying cannery buildings store offices warehouse machine shop and net lofts with an estimated loss of about 500000. The blaze started from an oil stove in the store or office and wind spread it rapidly. No injuries were reported though over 100 workers lost homes and the company will relocate them as accommodations are sought. Eric Bulmer now oversees the plant in his first year.

Local Carpenter Andrew Boreng Dies in Kodiak
Andrew Boreng, a Kodiak resident for over a decade, died at Griffin Memorial hospital after being found on the floor of his Tagura district home. Cause was cerebral hemorrhage. Born March 27, 1883 in Norway, he is survived by his wife Elise and a son in Norway. He left a will naming Elise as heir and the Bank of Kodiak as executor.
