Bartlett and four Third Division candidates spoke at the Elk's Club community dinner hosted by the Russian Women's Club. Irene Ryan Z J Louzzac Al Owen and Russell Young toured Kodiak Island aboard a Grumman Goose piloted by Vince Daly after meeting voters. Territorial election set for early October. Democrats met at Union Hall at 10 am yesterday.
Raymond Kelley a 32 year old Old Harbor resident pled guilty in U S Commissioner’s court to two liquor violations. He admitted possessing liquor for sale in Old Harbor on August 25 1952 and selling it the same date. He also pled guilty to possessing two cases of beer 315 pints of Four Roses and four pints of Imperial whiskey for resale. He received a 30 day federal jail sentence. Marshal Dizney seeks more help investigating illicit liquor transactions and cautions village sellers to study the law.
Wildlife Service crews posted warnings for campers hunters and sport fishermen around Kodiak Island this week. A large brown bear rescues a fawn from a raging forest fire, illustrating safety and fire danger.
General Eisenhower denounces the Truman administration as bungling and warns it risks World War III in a Philadelphia address. He advocates winning the peace by winning the Washington battle, dismissing isolationism and appeasement while criticizing containment. Large crowd greeted Ike as Stevenson plans Western tour and Seattle speech.
Kodiak voters approved vacating the east addition plat by a large majority in a Tuesday special election. A total of 155 votes were cast with 140 in favor and 15 against, paving the way to accept the new plat prepared by Aleutian Homes, Inc. for the housing project.
A notice seeks Dorothy Andrews and asks anyone with information on her whereabouts to contact U S Deputy Marshal Clarence Dizney, who has received a letter from Glenwood Iowa inquiring about the woman.
The Kodiak Business and Professional Women's Club posted one of the territory’s best records in its campaign for the Alaska Division of the American Cancer Society. Mrs Mildred Herman thanked Mrs Betty Springhill noting per capita contributions and participation were strong. Local BPW raised 1528 dollars toward a 1000 dollar goal, collecting by jars cans and subscriptions with McGrath the per capita champion and Kodiak second.
Kodiak Community Library seeks volunteer librarians to cover one evening a week. Mrs. Marshall Crutcher leads the project with library hours 7 to 8 30 pm on Monday Wednesday and Friday and Wednesday afternoons. Current volunteers include Miriam Dorman Merrill Coon Mel Crawford Connie Dandeneau Mary Beam and A Holmes Johnson.
The first Parent Teachers Association meeting of the 1952 58 school year will be held Thursday at 7 45 pm in the Home Economics room at the school. A program a display of flower paintings and refreshments will be served. Prospective members are urged to attend and become acquainted with the teachers and members. The Pacific Northern Airlines building was being remodelled this week.
Fred Sundberg, 41, father of three, died at Griffin Memorial Hospital minutes after a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a .22 rifle. Patrolman Cliff Mowry had disarmed him earlier. Marilyn Sundberg alerted authorities. Funeral planned at the Russian Orthodox Church with burial in the Russian cemetery.
The Alaska Music Trails Concert Association will meet Monday at 8 at Mrs. Pat Mitchell’s home to discuss plans for the concert season. Tickets for four concerts are $9 each and events run October November March and April with Kodiak as chair. The AMT extends across Anchorage Cordova Douglas Fairbanks Juneau Ketchikan Petersburg Seward Sitka Wrangell and Prince Rupert Ocean Falls. Luigi Silva Bela Urban and Maxim Shapiro are the featured artists.
Mrs. Tom Frost hosted a stork shower for Mrs. Joe Hester on Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Frosts mother, Mrs. Otto Mahle, on Mission Road.
Mr and Mrs Paul Rivers sold the Kodiak Laundry to Frank Johnson of Woody Island. The Rivers ran the business for two years as Mrs Rivers left for medical care in Seattle to visit her daughter and granddaughter and plans to return to Kodiak later in the fall.
