Ivor Schott superintendent announced Tuesday opening day for all grades. First graders may enroll with a parent bearing a birth certificate. six years old by November 1, 1949 qualifies. Grade school enrolls 8:45 am. high school moves to abbreviated schedule from 1 pm. $5 book deposit refundable at year end. Stamp club meets at Mrs. Lee Bettlinger’s home at 8 pm.
The Parent Teacher Association hosts a 2 pm tea at the Baptist Church to honor Kodak Public School teachers. Invitations extend to PTA members and Independent School Board members, with Mrs. Homer Lightfoot, PTA president, noting the event yesterday.
Mrs Antjie Huer is appointed to the bank insurance department with several years of experience in similar roles in Anchorage and Seattle.
Voting in the Kodiak Queen contest shifts to a suspenseful finish as Dolores Jones holds first place with sponsors predicting an open race. The crowning occurs at 9 pm Monday outside St Mary's Church after ceremonies beginning at 7:30 pm, with results at 9 and a chance for a Chrysler prize drawing.
The women of the Russian Church will host a dinner in honor of the Kodiak Public School faculty on Thursday. The event takes place in the church basement with 50 seats available. Admission is $2.50 per plate, tickets from Gene Marlar at the Alaska Steamship Company office. teachers attend free.
A 10 day Alaska inspection party will include General Omar Bradley General Hoyt S Van denberg General J Lawton Collins and Vice Admiral Arthur D Strubie. Defense Secretary Louis Johnson said the group will inspect Kodiak defenses with arrival date not announced.
Afognak fisherman Louis Pinky Larson, 26, was reported missing after last seen Sunday morning talking with James Spracher and Charles Reft, then boarding the boat Juan at the Donnelley and Acheson dock. Deputy Marshal Clarence Dizney led a town and beach search. clothing and effects were found aboard the Juan. Larson, 5'9", 190 pounds, dark brown hair, has family in Afognak and Larson Bay. Anyone with information should contact the marshal's office.
Coast Guard Cutter Cedar commander Lieut F H Harmon is transferred from Kodiak to Seattle for orders and repairs. Mrs Harmon and their child accompany him aboard. The Cedar, based in Kodiak for a year, will be repaired in Seattle and a new commander will take charge before returning to Kodiak in about three months.
