NOB School Tuesday Opens At Navy Base
Superintendent Donald V. Lawvere announced that NOB School at the navy base will open Tuesday September 5 with registration from 9 to 12 and regular classes beginning Wednesday. Expected registration is about 250, up from 208 last September and 245 by year end. New high school courses include home economics Spanish shorthand mechanical drawing and chemistry. New teachers include Loretta Dowd Rivers Bryan Pollard and others. a kindergarten will be operated under the base school board with a teacher to be named.

Duck Season Opens October First in Kodiak Area
Duck and goose hunting in the Kodiak Afognak area may begin October 1 and run until November 24. Frank Beals, game refuge manager, announced. Scoter and eider may be taken in Third Judicial division west of 152 degrees west longitude from September 7 to December 21. Daily bag limits: six ducks, ten scoters and eiders, or twenty in aggregate. wood ducks limited to one per day or possession. Mourning doves closed. The fall bear season opened yesterday.

Community Center to Run Only on Local Funds
A public meeting showed local business leaders support continuing the center but restrict operation to funds raised. Donations totaling 1040 erased a 1000 deficit, with 150 from delinquent pledges. Harold Bettinger Dies In California
Harold Bettinger 39 a former Kodiak resident died at his San Francisco home after a long illness. He came to Kodiak in 1941 and worked with Lee C Bettinger and Jim Pierce at Kodiak Bottling Works. He served in the Army in Kodiak and Tanacross during World War II and owned property here. Funeral services were held in the Military Cemetery in San Francisco.

Married Men May Be Drafted Soon Under 26 Deferral Lifted
Washington officials announced that the draft will extend to married men of draft age with dependents, deferring only those under 26 for now.
