Seattle AP reports a plea before the Interstate Commerce Commission to apply export-import rail rates to cross-country shipments destined for Alaska. Maxwell H. Elliott General Counsel F W Debbiston said savings would reach thousands yearly and boost Alaska’s growth. Debbiston represented GSA as it pressed for lower rates after 1954 railroad refusals, with hearings set for Seattle and Anchorage.

Newsprint Price Calls For Action in Seattle

Senator Magnuson of Washington urged immediate exploration of Alaska newsprint production if Canadian firms raise prices. Spencer resigns as City Dock superintendent

Harry Spencer known as Spence, city dock superintendent, resigned last Monday with resignation effective November 5. He has served as wharfinger since April 1950 after earlier work as a Kodiak paint contractor. He will join Aleutian Homes Inc as maintenance man. The city seeks qualified local applicants for the vacated post, with applications due before October 31.

Thorsheims Celebrate Twenty Fifth Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Bryant Thorsheim marked their twenty fifth wedding anniversary at the Montmartre on Saturday October 22 with fifty guests at a buffet supper. They were married October 19 1930 in Kodiak and many in the original wedding party attended including Ben Kraft best man Frieda Blinn Marian Fitzgerald and Mary Higgins. The couple has resided in Kodiak since their marriage with Bryant a barber for over 30 years.

Chamber of Commerce members endorsed a sales tax to fund street improvements and a small boat harbor. The levy would be limited to specified uses and shared by residents and transients. Hinckels And Smiths Drive Down Highway

Hinckels Jack and Tina Hinckel travel with Bill and Hazel Smith and two Kodiak natives from Anchorage on September 28 for a ten day trip to Seattle. They stop at Chitina ghost town and reach Seattle October 9, enjoying scenery and photos while medical checkups occur in Seattle and Portland. The Smiths plan a world tour from Ocean Lake Oregon next year. Rickie Slater hosts seven birthday Davy Crocketts at his home with hot dogs, matinee, ice cream, and cake.
