Seattle relief voyage to Alaska sails with clothing and stock feed

The CIO Committee for Maritime Unity announced a relief ship will sail for Alaska with clothing and stock feed. The vessel will first head for western and central Alaska before returning south along the coast. Committee Chairman Burt warned against betrayal and said negotiations must proceed to avoid another failed effort.

Eight Arrests For Drunken Disorderly Behavior This Week

Eight individuals were arrested for drunken and disorderly conduct this week. Police reported multiple incidents across downtown areas and crowded venues, with officers citing intoxication and disruptive conduct as the primary factors.

National Air Mail Week Observance and History Notes

The week of October 27 to November 2 marks National Air Mail Week honoring the Post Office Department. OPA Announces Price Controls Removed Except Rice Sugar

The local OPA office relayed a Juneau wire stating price controls are removed at 12:01 a.m. on the 24th for all foods and beverages except rice sugar and sugar solution. Ceilings remain on sales by food restaur ants and other sellers.

Three Vehicle Wreck Near Lake Louise on Base Highway

A quonset hut being towed by a tractor collided head on with a Navy truck driven by P A Patnoude USN near the south end of Lake Louise on the base highway at about 3 pm Thursday. A taxi owned by Jake LaVollette and driven by Norman Spencer struck the Navy truck from behind. Spencer was unhurt while Patnoude suffered a cut in one leg. Spencer said sun glare blinded him and slowed his taxi before the crash.

Kodiak Sees Coin Shortage Relief and Food Stresses

A $1500 shipment of coins arrived by air easing a nickel dime and quarter shortage in Kodiak but food items remain tight despite rationing. A PNA freight plane brought fruit from Anchorage and eggs sell high. Local bakeries and dairies report flour and milk supply issues while merchants seek relief from Seattle. Meat, butter, and eggs are still available.

Carnival in a Country Town Comes to Kodiak

The Kodiak Community Center hosts a large Halloween carnival next Thursday Oct 31 with prizes including $50 door prize and food items. Events run 7 to 8 30 children program and 8 30 dance, with a Wheel of Fortune country store Beano guessing games and a fortune teller Madame Zatara. Navy Day Open House At Naval Base With Exhibits And Tours

Special transportation exhibits games prizes and other features mark Navy Day celebrations at the naval base inviting public participation. Exhibits run 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm October 26 with displays including PBY Catalina bomber Douglas Twin Engine Transport Grumman Goose and Duck aircraft and the U S S ARD-22 vessel capable of drydocking ships up to 3500 tons. All navy ships in port open 2 pm to 5 pm.

Kodiak bars and liquor stores will stay shut on Sunday Navy Day until 5 pm following an official closing observance announced by the Kodiak Retail Liquor Dealers Association.

Buses Ferry 120 Kodiak Children to Navy Day Tour

Three bus loads of Kodiak youngsters will tour the Navy Base this afternoon as part of Navy Day observances. Chaperoned by Ken Wade, they depart the Kodiak Community Center at 1 30 p m for guided tours of the base including aircraft and ships. The community Chest carnival awaits on return at 5 p m.

Rescued men on Shuyak Island as search expands

After a two day effort two men were rescued from Shuyak Island north of Kodiak. Navy and CAA personnel overseen by J S Post of Grande Ronde Ore and Mr Hamilton assisted by YMS 434 crew conducted land and air searches for a missing member of the searching party. A plane was dispatched from NAS Kodiak but returned with no findings.

Laundry Fire Injures Dinner Nook Owner Amanda Price

Amanda Price, laundry operator and Dinner Nook owner, is hospitalized with first and second degree burns to arms and face after a Tuesday evening blaze at her S Brooklyn laundry. A volatile cleaning fluid in a tub caused a rapid flash, a window blew out, and a washing area fire spread. George Bamber leaped through flames to rescue Price and toss burning laundry into the tub. Firefighters arrived quickly as separate fires in the floor and walls were fought and suppressed.
