Public health nurse resigns. Kodiak without nurse staff

Miss Kathleen Lepper, recently assigned to Kodiak, resigned suddenly and flew to Anchorage on Saturday without a stated reason. The move leaves Kodiak without a public health nurse as three resignations occurred in the past year, with Miss Lepper’s departure following earlier staff changes and itinerant nurse Cora Oberlies' island trip.

Assailant Held On First Degree Murder Charge

A 37 year old Kodiak Naval Station worker, Roger B Howland, has been bound over on a first degree murder charge for the killing of Raymond Cruz, a 19 year old Marine, in the civilian cafeteria over a five dollar debt. The shooting occurred around noon with a 7 65 mm Beretta, after Howland asked about the debt and Cruz allegedly responded with disbelief. Howland waived counsel and a preliminary hearing, then was taken before U S Commissioner A M Vokacek. The weapon was later surrendered to MPs by Howland.

Missing Man Sought Here Earl Young Port Williams

A search by the U S Marshal's office and City Police has been active for ten days for Earl Shorty Young a Port Williams resident reported missing last week with a sighting on October 16. Authorities searched beaches and under docks and urge anyone with information to contact police. Young is about 50 years old.

Housing Work Not Delayed Kodiak Project

Portland AP reports Aleutian Homes president Ray Woodbury says no litigation will delay the Kodiak housing project. An architect’s suit over unpaid work is expected to be dismissed as plans proceed. Blasting and grading on the site began this week by Patrick Lynch Company under contract with Aleutian Homes.

New Plane Bought for Hall Flying Service in Alaska

Mr and Mrs Bob Hall purchased a Grumman Widgeton in Anchorage and flew it to Kodiak. This marks the third aircraft they are using in the operation of their flying service.

Maddux Indicted in Kodiak Shooting Case

Grand Jury charges Kodiak carpenter Maddux with assault to kill former Kodiak Chief Carter Seymour after a November 4 1951 shooting at Seymour’s home near Mission Road. Witnesses include Seymour who testified with a damaged hand in a traction device. Bail set at 5000 dollars. Seymour treated for injuries and has not been in Kodiak since December 1951. Other witnesses noted include McKinley and Nibblock. Separate item reports intention to wed Gaylord Jones of Kodiak and Esther S Myhre of Vancouver B C.

Local Rent Office Could Close After Staff Reductions

Mrs Bonnie Nelson the associate area rent director said yesterday the local rent office may close after a reduction in force. About six of ten Rent Stabilization employees were notified. Mrs Dorothy Smith of Anchorage was due to arrive to inventory the office and possibly close it. The office opened this spring by John Woolworth from San Francisco Office of Area 8.

Polio Epidemic Hits Ketchikan Sees First Death

Ketchikan reports 15 polio cases this month with a 45-year-old man dying within hours of hospital admission. The 10th Rescue Squadron delivered two iron lungs to Annette Island and Coast Guard boats moved them to Ketchikan as a precaution amid the worst outbreak since 1950. Alaska health officials say about ten polio cases annually in a city of 100,000, with no Kodiak area cases reported.

Accountancy Board Meets At Juneau in Territory

Marshall Crutcher president of the Bank of Kodiak was scheduled to leave today for Juneau to attend a meeting of the Territorial Board of Accountancy. The board will issue licenses to public accountants and discuss legislation for the coming session of the Territorial Legislature. The board is composed of five members from various parts of the territory.
