Ben Kraft and Sergen Fredrickson organize the Kodiak town drive to raise 3500 for school athletics and music plus a broad youth program. Workers will use receipt books and lodges, pledges kept to a minimum to ease later collection concerns, with many activities placed on a self supporting basis.
Reports from Anchorage state Karluk village faced an apparent epidemic but tests show mainly upper respiratory infections. The North Star native service vessel with a doctor aboard arrived and sent findings to Kodiak and Anchorage. Mrs. O S Campbell travels to Seattle for winter. her husband Cappy Campbell serves on an Army boat at Whittier.
Public Health Nurse Miss Mary Hurley arrived from New York and reopened the public health office closed since Miss Marion Curtis resigned October 6. Hurley had a test appointment at 1 30 PM on game day and was joined by acting assistant nursing director Miss Helen Johnson of Juneau for a few days to re establish the nursing service.
Ivor Schott, Kodiak superintendent of schools, left Juneau yesterday for McCune Kansas after his father died from a stroke. He was attending a conference in Juneau when notified of the death.
A false rumor spread that a polio case appeared on Mission road but officials said the infant involved was not ill. The Alaska epidemic front eased with one new case reported in Anchorage Thursday.
Word reached yesterday that Bob Hope’s announced base and Alaska appearances have been canceled. The related page 3 report had already gone to press.
A nine month old infant Lydia Karlsen of Sanak Island swallowed an open safety pin. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. E. A. Crock and LTJG G. W. Wagner flew from Kodiak to Sanak in 3.5 hours landing at Pavlof harbor to pick up the mother and child. The Navy then transported the child to Anchorage where equipment removed the pin lodged in the throat. The child was reported in good condition after removal.
Mrs Drake and her infant arrived Thursday from Missouri where she had been visiting relatives. Mr Oscar Drake is noted as one of the local teachers.
A marshal's sale is scheduled for November 6 for the benefit of E. A. Pearson holder of a 2800 mortgage on the Quality Bakery equipment. The bakery owned by Lonnie Scroggins on Brooklyn Avenue has been closed since the operator went fishing.
Eva Rochelle reports the iron lung fund is progressing well with $600 raised from 81 collection spots around town. Contributors include Woody Island to the tune of $163.50, Rotary Club $46.37, VFW Cooties $37.50, BPW about $40, Baptists $75, and three children $30. A remaining $32 from a disbanded Horticulture Society treasury is noted.
Alaska’s first open elk season drew 27 hunters brave in clement weather and rough terrain. Navy teams used helicopter and seaplane to move meat to base while civilians and five other veterans claimed elk over three days. Lt. Comdr. L J Carr earned largest antlers. Rachel Shimmel claimed second. Six women hunted, including Priscilla Phelps and Mrs. Shimmel, who offered her trophy to the Elks club.
A list of 27 hunters led a Kodiak Elk hunt on Afognak island where 7 Roosevelt elk were taken during a period reported by the Wildlife service. Ward Gay of Anchorage was wounded by a knife, with no further casualties. A January plane census will guide a Juneau February game commission decision on next season. The Roosevelt herd, placed on Afognak in 1928, remains unique. Fifty licenses issued this season. Field officials included E Elkins David Spencer Frank Beals Roy Lindsley and Kim Clark. An appended roster names all 27 successful elk hunters.
The flying district court returns to Kodiak Monday at 2 pm in Union Hall with Judge Anthony Dimond presiding. Court party includes clerk M. E. S. Brunelle, secretary Mrs Verna Knutsen, and court reporter Orin Casey. Two naturalizations and several divorces are on the calendar.
Deputy U S Marshal Clarence Dizney is in Portland taking custody of two insane patients one from Kodiak. Ivan Blood serves in charge during his absence.
The Catholic Ladies Guild met at the home of Mrs Marie Cardinal on Mission road. The next meeting will be Nov 1 with Mrs Thelma Johnson on Carlson hill.
The Russian church holds a lunch from noon to 4 and a dinner from 4 to 8 featuring Pirok fish pie a unpronounceable soup and other traditional Russian foods as well as roast beef. Prices are 1 for adults 50 cents for children at lunch and 2 for adults 75 cents for children at dinner. Proceeds support the Iron Lung Fund. Everyone is welcome.
Lucielle's Record Shop run by Mrs. Lucielle Nixon will relocate over the weekend and open Monday in the Frontier Shop. Mrs. Nixon also becomes manager of the Frontier, announced by Mrs. Catherine Blankenburg who has resumed ownership of the gift shop.
