Clipper Brings Food After Narrow Kodiak Passage

The Reefer Clipper, a 112 foot former navy sub chaser trading vessel from Seattle, reached port after a harrowing voyage two hours offshore near Marmot Island. Heavy seas damaged bow and hatch covers, a crew member braved waves to secure lines, and cargo included 90 tons of essential goods for Modiak.

Power outage hits town after KEA main feeder burns

Early Friday power failed across the town when a 2400 volt feeder in front of the KEA plant burned in the conduit. After a 3 hour search the fault was found and repairs restored power by about 7:40 am. The outage began at 12:45 am.

Seabeck Safe At Cordova After Tug Transfer

The Seabeck called for help last Friday afternoon and was taken to Cordova by a navy tug. Owner Dick Olsson awaits word on damage while Frank McConaghy planned to inspect and report. In local news the Virginia B sank after breaking mooring in the wind, then was patched and hauled ashore. Bettinger to speak at PTA meeting Wednesday at 8 pm at the school.

City Council Actions and Unpaid Federal Claim

The council urged Elmer C Johnson to provide an itemized annual audit statement and faced a $1900 audit bill plus $380 for a dock audit, higher than earlier estimates. They also halted this month’s phone bill, asserting payment only for services received. A $1500 federal recovery for old city hall removal remains unpaid until title transfer.

Kodiak Elects Dems as Votes Tallied in Territorial Race

Latest returns place Bettinger ninth and Territory eighth as Democrats lead in territorial elections. In Kodiak heavy turnout and late-night tabulations marked the count with 55 of 68 precincts reported. Fish trap abolition prevailed in 116 precincts, 159, 16,159 to 1,834.

Re-elected W A Cannon Leads Alaska Fishermen Union

W A Pat Cannon was re elected president of the United Fishermen of Alaska at a three day convention, hailed as highly successful. P J Kerrigan was re elected executive secretary, with Harry Foster of Unga as vice president and A J Cichoski and Henry Eaton on the executive board. The meeting set fish prices for 1949, funded labor councils, opposed Karluk as a reservation, and authorized Foster to negotiate with Aleutian Cold Storage for a workers contract.
