Kodiak launches an iron lung fund drive led by the Emblem Club with cans and bottles in 81 spots plus base and town support. Four Marines lost in Korea are named as local casualties, including Cpl Donald S Hadley and Pfc Hubert S Hunter.
On October 18 Alaska Day marks the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States. Sitka hosts a festival to celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the cession with events and commemorations.
Mrs. Edith Clarke a Kodiak first grade teacher has two sons in Korea, one flying missions from Manila to Tokyo four hours after hostilities began. Howard a lieutenant in the air force is in the Pusan area and hopes for a 30 day furlough. Tom Dick, in the Naval Reserves, arrived in Korea August 29 after her visit in Nashville. She longs for a house to host Howard during a hoped for furlough and endures hotel life while awaiting housing.
Ben Benson, noted for designing Alaska’s blue and gold star emblem, reports his commemorative Legion watch stolen from Donnelley and Acheson’s store display in September. The watch was a gift for his service and bears his name, with no other items missing. A reward is offered for its return. inquiries should be made to the store.
Consulting engineer Carl D Pollock from Seattie arrived Thursday to review Hubbell and Waller water and sewer project work. He plans to depart Saturday after completing initial assessments.
Two deaths raise Alaska polio toll to five as health officials name Robert Tomlinson of Ketchikan and an unnamed Point Barrow woman among the victims. Anchorage adds one new case, total cases now 32.
Cpl. Bill Hartman 21 of Kodiak sends a letter home from Korea describing life in fox holes and patrols. He recalls advancing north, broken trucks, low casualties, and encounters with enemy fighters now largely surrendered or dead. He mentions family back home, including sister Hazel, and hints the war may end soon.
Dr. A. Holmes Johnson announces a community fund drive to raise 3500 dollars for the school recreational fund. Ben Kraft is named chairman with Jorgen Fredricksen as cochair. The campaign begins Sunday Oct 22 for a three day effort to support basketball trips gym access and band supplies.
H N Peterson general traffic manager Seattle and Schuyler Duryea assistant general manager Ketchikan called this week on Orrin H Kimball local Alaska Steam ship agent. It was their annual visit for the company and they left here for Homer.
