Groups Organize G O Vote Effort In Kodiak Region

Several groups join to boost turnout as election day nears in Kodiak. BPW works with the Seal Teamsters Union to run free rides to polls during National Business Women's Week. VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary assist. Absentee voting requires two day notice at the U S Commissioner's Office. Voting hours are 8 am to 7 pm. Areas include Usinkie Afognak Karluk Alit ak arsen Bay Old Harbor and nearby communities. Cannery workers traveled from Port Vida and Iron Creek aboard Alaska and Pacific Northern airlines.

Bishop Seeks Unity Amid Kodiak Mission Debate

Bishop John Zlobin of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska questioned other denominations establishing missions on Kodiak Island. He toured Afognak and Karluk, says diverse faiths in a city are fine but older remote communities should keep their traditional Orthodox faith, noting Russian Orthodoxy was the island’s first church.

Two Local Tenders In Rough Seas Near Cape St. Elias

Two local cannery tenders the Seabeck and the Nora issued distress calls to the Coast Guard late yesterday as heavy seas raged near Cape St. Elias while en route to Seattle. Each vessel carries five aboard and were awaiting tugs from Cordova and Kodiak after reports of brutal weather. The Seabeck’s owners are Richard Olson and Ed Gunderson with George Howland to navigate to Seattle. the Nora is skippered by Fritz DeVeau and owned by Island Seafoods Cannery. Frank McConaghy spoke with the Seabeck around 10 pm, confirming it was weathering the seas awaiting the Cordova tug in daylight.

Joker in Union Offer Stirs Alaska Shipping Debate

Skinner reports Gov Gruening warned of a joker in CIO union plans to load and sail ships to Alaska under pre strike terms with retroactive pay raises if granted. He notes Seattle Mayor Devin secured a deal with CIO unions to head and sail to Alaska under pre strike conditions. The joke, Skinner says, is ships would sail with no cargo and the union would name ports of call as in the Nome relief ship plan. Local union leaders had offered Alaska vessels after a meeting with Mayor Devin amid firms aligned with the Waterfront Employers Association who refused talks with union officials not signatory to Taft Hartley law.

Heinie Berger’s barge due weekend with 300 sacks of potatoes and provisions from Anchorage wholesalers, plus liquor. The Clipper private trading vessel also arrives weekend with fresh produce and groceries. Air express deliveries continue with freight gains reported by one airline and increased tonnage by another. Mrs. Alice Given notes feed for A J farm chickens will last months with Clipper bringing more feed. The standard agent sees no immediate danger of shortages for stove oil, diesel fuel, or gasoline.
