Joker in Union Offer Stirs Alaska Shipping Debate
Skinner reports Gov Gruening warned of a joker in CIO union plans to load and sail ships to Alaska under pre strike terms with retroactive pay raises if granted. He notes Seattle Mayor Devin secured a deal with CIO unions to head and sail to Alaska under pre strike conditions. The joke, Skinner says, is ships would sail with no cargo and the union would name ports of call as in the Nome relief ship plan. Local union leaders had offered Alaska vessels after a meeting with Mayor Devin amid firms aligned with the Waterfront Employers Association who refused talks with union officials not signatory to Taft Hartley law.
