Polls Open Tuesday General election for Third Judicial Division on Tuesday

Voters head to city hall or polling places from 8 am to 8 pm Tuesday for a general election. Candidates include Bob Bartlett and Almer Peterson for Congress delegate, Henry Benson and Ross Kimball for labor commissioner, Henry Roden unopposed for treasurer, and a senatorial slate led by Gannard Engebreth Heinie Snider plus Loussac and Rivers. Seven representatives will be elected from 14 names. Democratic Women’s Guild aids turnout with free transport. absentee ballots available until two days before. Registration occurs now. qualified voters must have citizenship, Alaska residency of one year, and district residency of one month.

Northwest Peace Officers visit Alaska for publication plans

Robert E. Goodher and Chester Koch of the Northwest Peace Officer's association arrived Wednesday via PNA to contact local business leaders about a publication they back which aims to issue an Alaska edition. Polio Hits in Alaska Across Three Cities

In Anchorage 10 polio cases are confirmed with 14 in Fairbanks and a new case in Ketchikan, the third there. Dr. C Earl Albrecht said resources for medical care matter more than attempting to halt the epidemic, criticizing fly swatting and other campaigns. The Coast Guard ferried polio patients from Ketchikan to Seattle, including Gordon Hanna who died on arrival, and John Greathouse under care at Seattle Marine Hospital.

Senator Magnusen to Visit Kodiak This Month

Senator Warren G Magnusen Democrat of Washington will visit Kodiak this month according to a call to Mayor Lee Bettinger. He is coming to Alaska to join the Congressional committee which will be there at that time. A definite arrival date will be set later.

Mayor Lee C. Bettinger secured a fifth term with 207 votes to 98 for write-in Paul Hansen, as the Progressive Party swept council seats with Metzgar 218, Wodlinger 217, Worth 185. Independent School District winner was Crooks with 193 to Fenner 188. A criminal libel action against H F MacDonald was filed, bail set at 50, venue change requested.

Claims Filed On Island Sitkalidak Vein Lode Locations

Three notices of lode location on Sitkalidak island were filed this week in the U S Commissioner's Court by Nils Christiansen and Raymond E Krautter of Old Harbor and Paul B Hansen of Kodiak. The locations Copper Ace Copper King and Copper Queen cover the Fit kalidak vein on the island's west side. The document states the lode was discovered with dates including Oct 8 1939 located Aug 28 1956 and recorded Monday. Sitkalidak sits near Kodiak's southeast shore and has been leased to Jack McCord since the Coolidge administration for sheep and cattle raising.

Elk Hunt Ends With 13 Killed and Hunter Wounded

Ward Gay, an Anchorage hunter, injured his leg while skinning an elk on Back Bay near Atognak. Bob Hall flew him to Kodiax for treatment last night. he plans to return home today. Wildlife official Frank Beals reports 13 elk killed by yesterday.

Two Ships Set to Deliver Freight to Kodiak Area

The Alaska Steamship Coastal Rambler will arrive in Kodiak Sunday with freight and mail and proceed to Seward. The Coastwise line vessel North Beacon is due October 12 carrying 500 tons of freight.

Nurse Curtis Closes Office in Seven-Year Run

The public health nurse Marion Curtis ends seven years in office after resignation. Mary Hurley from New York will replace her, arriving October 19. The office will be closed temporarily. Curtis and Patrick Lynch plan a December wedding with details pending.
