Fish Season May Be Late
The Kodiak commercial fishing season may not open until August 1 next year. A proposal to delay the opening will be made to the Fish and Wildlife Service director in Washington, D. C., by Seton Thompson, FWS Alaska chief. Thompson led the annual Kodiak fisheries hearing at the community center with Karl Brunstad, George Kelez, and Frank Hynes present. only 18 people attended. He cited poor red salmon runs and said measures to restore them will be painful but necessary, stressing that final rulings lie with Interior. Brunstad proposed using cannery offal to propagate salmon in red salmon lakes and suggested a Kodiak Island fish hatchery. Joe Kerrigan attended for United Fishermen of Alaska, noting that after the upcoming fishermen’s convention the union will submit recommendations.

Ink Finds New Use on Main Street Signs
The MIRROR ink used to print pages was repurposed for stenciling no parking and one hour parking signs on freshly painted yellow curbs. Kodiak Bottling Works supplied the paint, and Patrolman Jacque Pardieu performed the painting.

CAB Hears About Local Airlines in Anchorage Session

Mr and Mrs Gren Collins of Anchorage also spoke as did Alaska Airlines VP Henry Beards.

Christmas Seal Sale In October
The annual Christmas seal sale to aid tubercu losis victims will run in the Kodiak area from Oct 15 to Nov 15. Rev. R N Wilkinson, chairman, said seals will be mailed early to reach states before Nov 15. Assistants include Mrs L J Dow at the base and Mrs Mack Manning at Woody Is. A goal of 3000 dollars was set with seals mailed from the base and sold in town stores, aided by the Kodiak BPW.

Interest in the city election appears low with no write in candidates reported and nominees limited to three council vacancies and the mayoral post. The mayoral candidates are Lee C. Bettinger and Jack Hinckel along with Henry Neseth and Ray Shannon for council. Independent School Board candidates are Robert Hall and Robert Acheson, who asks his supporters to back Hall.
