Ex Base Man Milo Dibble Shot in San Francisco

Milo Dibble a former Kodiak Navy civilian employee and local figure was shot by San Francisco police around November 17 after an exchange of gunfire and a hand to hand struggle in a hotel room. He previously served in the Navy, was a mental patient at Mare Island, and had returned to San Francisco six months earlier.

Breaks Wrist Watching Dancers at Harvest Ball

Laurence Anderson, a seventh grade student, broke his wrist in two places while watching dancers at the Harvest Ball at the Community Center. He slipped from the outside of a first story window where he and other youths had been hanging on the sill. the fall was a few feet to the ground and affected his right wrist.

Council and Chamber Meetings Canceled by Low Attendance

No regular city council meeting Monday due to lack of quorum. Chamber of Commerce meeting moved to Wednesday for Thanksgiving but attendance was too small to convene. A large bone found by Albert Oxford on a hunting trip at the community center is identified as whale remains.

The Kodiak Rifle and Pistol club met Tuesday at City Hall and elected Ted Rozak president Dale Barton vice president James Jonte executive officer Tom Nachand secretary treasurer Wilton White chief instructor and Anna Nachand publicity officer Vacancies in four other positions remain to be filled Two committees seek an inside range for club use The next meeting is December 5 at 8 pm at City Hall Open to men and women 18 or older A beginner class will be organized.

School Plays Garner Laughs at Orpheum Theater

Black Friars sponsored two Kodiak High plays directed by James Bennett. Chicken in the Rough and Make Room for Rodney drew laughter as students portrayed roles by Don Rosak Jim Pearson Betty Kizer Blanche Brillon and others. The Kodiak High band performed and debuted Kodiak Loyalty. About $300 was raised for a new gym fund.

Frenchy du Bos, reportedly shot by his estranged wife last week, was discharged from Griffin Memorial Hospital early this week and returned to work Thursday as a bartender at Idle Hour Bar. The incident occurred at his home and no charges followed.

Local Girl Weds In Seattle

A church wedding last Saturday in Seattle united Miss Anna Belle Metrokin daughter of Mr and Mrs Ed Metrokin of this city and Donald Murphy of Seattle. The groom formerly served in the Signal Corps here and now works at a Seattle drug store. The bride studied in Kodiak graduating high school in 1945 and once worked at Christys bakery before moving to Seattle.

Christmas shoppers need not fear the strike as local merchants report stocks are as large as last year with a wide range of items. Parcel post on relief ships and naval vessels over the past two months has delivered perfumes jewelry clothing and other goods to local stores.

Seattle Deadlock Over Alaska Relief Ship Approvals

Lt Comdr E P Chester Jr, naval aide to Governor Gruening, reports a deadlock among waterfront employers and unions on releasing Alaska relief ships. The Marine Trades council reaffirmed a five ship offer with eight Seattle and two Tacoma loads, if wages match CIO unions. If no agreement by today, negotiators may move to Portland. The Grommet Reefer, relief ship bound for Kodiak, is due in Seward this weekend and will call at Kodiak after Seldovia.

Jackie Nelsons Fliers defend Kodiak league title at center

In Sunday action at the Community Center the Jackie Nelsons Fliers beat Tim Chernoff Jr s Cubs 15 12 15 13 to claim the league crown. Teammates include Bob Burgess Kay Wade Ken Wade and Harold Heglint he replaced Ken Wade in the final after the center director pulled a leg muscle. Earlier, the Fliers beat Tommy Gallagher s Polar Bears while the Cubs edged Charles Jennings Jaguars. The Cub defeated Bob Lear s Lions in the semi final. More games are set for tomorrow evening.
