Group Plans Waterfront Dumas Property in Kodiak
Word reached Kodiak this week of a group planning a waterfront Dumas property near the old Paul Walk off home. The building would include 24 four room apartments and is jointly owned by Kodiak residents. Anchorage architect and former mayor Maynard Taylor and Stanley J. McCutcheon, a prominent Anchorage attorney, are involved.

Hubbard Purchases 133 Acre Clarke Homestead for Development
Bob Hubbard Anchorage builder and two investors John Fray and Glenn Gould have completed negotiations to buy the 133 acre Clarke Homestead from the Erskine Estate. The property lies largely around Big Lake and will be developed in coordination with Kodiak expansion including the Kodiak Commercial department store and a planned four story Sheliker Hotel. Hubbard may relocate his residence to Kodiak and will visit Kodiak next week to discuss construction plans. Purchase price not disclosed.

Kodiak Mapmakers Put Kodiak On The Map
Three Kodiak High School juniors in the Industrial Arts class, Kenny Lester, Charlie Magnusen and James Shell, along with instructor Herb Carpenter, crafted 4 by 5 foot raised topographic maps of Kodiak Island. They paint each map in seven colors, will produce one daily from a master mold, and have orders from Governor William Egan for his office, Marine Highway vessels, travel offices, airline terminals, and an Alaska Exhibit at the New York World's Fair. Maps sell for 80 dollars, with proceeds funding class materials.

Jap and Red Fleets Departing for Now
Foreign fishing fleets have left Alaska waters with autumn, shrinking from over 400 vessels in July to about 45 ships in recent weeks. Shrimp fishing near the Pribilof Islands remains the sole Japanese activity in the eastern Bering Sea, while nearly 200 vessels have returned to Japan. Two stern ramp factory trawlers off southeast Kodiak Island continue limited operations with support ships. Continued observations.

Fisherman Lost in Kodiak Storm When Crab Vessel Capsizes
In Kodiak during a fierce winter sea, the 42-foot Audrey V capsized under tow by Coast Guard Bittersweet. Crewman Mike MacKay-Smith, 28, is presumed drowned after clinging to crab pots and vanishing in 30 to 35 foot seas. Skipper Jerry Williams, rescued after 22 minutes in the water, survived with severe exposure. Williams Reef near Cape Chiniak and the Bittersweet assisted, with two divers aiding and Williams later pulled aboard. Williams is the son of Mrs Barbara Williams. Smith leaves a three year old daughter and his mother Mrs E Gnadt of Nooksack, Wash.

Kodiak approves year round hotel project by council
The Kodiak city council unanimously approved a plan to develop a area in the small boat harbor for a year round tourist resort hotel. City owned tidelands will be offered for bid to provide parking and access for a proposed 60 room hotel on the breakwater. Earl Hillstrand of Anchorage, the project planner, is favored in bidding. The winning bidder must post a $50,000 cash performance bond.
