Tacoma Plane Crash Increases Death Toll

A four engine military transport inbound from Alaska crashed in fog near McChord Air Force Base killing 86 of 39 aboard. Survivors include two airmen and an eight year old boy. The C-54 left Fairbanks Thursday, stopped at Elmendorf, then flew to Tacoma. Air Force officials say it struck a tree during a ground control approach in heavy fog. Authorities continue searching for other missing aircraft from Alaska, including a C-124 Globemaster with 52 aboard and a C-119 Flying Boxcar with 20 aboard, in separate ongoing efforts amid fog and rain. The official list counts 25 Air Force passengers, a crew of 11, one Navy commander and eight Army men.

City To Receive New Ambulance From VFW Gift

George Sonntag, former commander of Katami Post 7056 VFW, told Kodiak city council that the VFW will purchase and donate a new ambulance. He showed photos of 1953 models and said the city currently has no ambulance. Moe Kimes leads the local post as commander, and the plan was approved at the last regular meeting.

Kodiak Carnival Nets Over $1000 For Bear Basketball

The Ko diak Public School basketball boosters report a benefit event at the school with proceeds of 422.44 to help the Kodiak Bears attend the Anchorage tournament. Three prizes were awarded including a platform rocker from Rhoades Furniture Store, a Deena floor lamp from O Kraft and Son, and a coffee maker from Donnelley and Acheson. Howard Carpenter, athletic director, urged prize recipients to claim items. The funds will cover team meal costs during travel.

Union Bank Reopens in Anchorage Under New Management

Union Bank of Anchorage opens at noon Tuesday under Dan Cuddy new president. He bought 51 percent of stock after Territorial Banking Board ordered closure on November 20. Former president Hassman and secretary McCutcheon resign as officials. Judge Dimond says depositors will lose nothing.

Bombing Raid Fails To Materialize In Kodiak

Kodiak planned a bombing raid for Wednesday but rain fog and bad flying weather halted the mission. Civil Defense Director George Sonntag called a Tuesday briefing for auxiliary firemen and police to outline air raid procedures. Plans reportedly included pamphlet drops by unidentified planes. Crab Processing Stops At Floating Cannery

The Alaska Salmon Industry Inc. mailed contract termination notices and seeks wage cuts to save the industry. Crab canneries shut down over price disputes with fishermen paid $1.25 per crab, while a Seattle market price runs higher. Deveau warns the industry is strangled by lack of understanding as outside boats fish for us in spring. U.S. Fish and Wildlife counts Kodiak Island crab take at 47,588 from Jan 1 to Nov 23 1952.

Brunstad Resigns Territorial Post

Karl Brunstad resigns from the Territorial Fisheries Board after years of service. The effective date awaits Governor Gruening's decision, though Brunstad favored immediate departure. He argued northern area fishermen deserve representation as the board appointment requires Territorial Legislature confirmation. The resignation letter will appear in next week's MIRROR.

Grafs Move to Seattle After Coast Guard Exit

Mr and Mrs Charles Graf plan to settle in Seattle in late January as Graf prepares for discharge from the Coast Guard. The couple, formerly stationed in Kodiak for several years, left Kodiak in May and have since been at the Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City. The Rotary Assembly met Tuesday evening at the home of Marshall Crutcher.

Pagano Brothers Return from States

Frank Pagano returned to Kodiak by plane Monday after months in the states with his brother Edward. The Pagano brothers visited relatives and friends in the Middle West. Edward, a San Francisco State College graduate, is pursuing postgraduate study. Kodiak Public School observed Thanksgiving with a midweek holiday. classes resumed Monday morning.
