Severe Wind Strips Kodiak as Planes, Homes Suffer Damage

A freezing wind storm battered Kodiak with 92 knot gusts at the Naval Base and winds averaging 39 knots. Planes were razed from moorings, garages and a jail area were flattened, roofs torn, and windows shattered. Schools closed for a day as batteries of damage were reported on homes, shops, and the hospital. some residents recalled near-misses as roofs and walls gave way.

Lt Edward W Jackson ex executive officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Cedar retires after 26 years of service effective December 31 He has served 24 years aboard the Cedar at Kodiak including a decade in Alaska and time in the South Pacific and China His wife plans to move to Seattle after retirement with hopes to return to Kodiak later The Cedar has returned to Kodiak from a routine patrol and will be in port several days for lights and buoys work in the harbor and surrounding area
