The Helsel Photo company in Kodiak was sold by Cecil Helsel to Charles Rutkowski and Leif Norman who will operate as partners with Norman in charge. The sale, for 15 000 dollars including real estate, stock and fixtures, was handled by manager Mrs Jeanette Bailey.

Missing Kodiak man linked to Seward disappearances

Seward officials reel from a string of missing men as Jimmy Bunch, a Kodiak arrival who drove a taxi, vanishes after a reported departure by boat. William Bryan, a carpenter, left a check at Northern Row on Oct 9 and has not been heard from. Hector Mason Brown, the rest owner, disappeared last, with a standing reward for info, dead or alive.

New Police Chief Magnusen Sworn In Amid Resignations

George Magnusen, a five month patrolman, was sworn in Monday as chief of police replacing Jack Allman who resigned the police post but kept the fire chief role. Allman’s fire chief pay was $50 monthly plus living quarters in the fire hall. Magnusen’s single-chief salary awaits council action. George Mahle was sworn in Monday to replace Magnusen as patrolman.

Conviction Upheld in Alaska Coat Embezzlement Case

Louise Williams Allred’s 10 year sentence for embezzling a fur coat was affirmed by the U S Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. She remains at the Alderson federal reformatory in West Virginia after bail was not posted. The indictment dated Sept 21 1943 followed a vault robbery at the Fairbanks Agency vault with losses over 65000.

Dawson Residence Fire-Damaged

Fire damaged the Robert E. Dawson residence on Brooklyn avenue after an oil range overheated while the family was away. Fire Chief Allman estimated about 500 dollars in damage, with smoke and water ruining furnishings. The blaze rekindled twice before full control. James Martz alerted authorities during the early morning incident.
