KEA Work Begins on New Redistribution System

KEA moved forward with the redistribution project this week but faced delays from securing the remaining easements. Ole Johnson KEA president reported poles were dug and rock was removed near the school area. Poles will be installed first in the school region to hook up the stove system, with completion expected today as project engineer Victor Rivers sought guidance and contractor Pat Lynch agreed to proceed despite cold weather.

Trial Set for December 1 in Belmont Cafe Garbage Case

A complaint charges George Kappos doing business as the Belmont Cafe with refusing to pay for garbage disposal. Myrna Perkins city magistrate heard Kappos plead not guilty last week and he requested a jury trial on December 1. Attorney Talmage Smith seeks subpoenas for several people including Mayor Bettinger and a councilman.

Largest Kodiak bear shot in 1889 by Tolman claims record

Fifty years after a magazine report, the Kodiak giant bear Tolman reportedly killed in October 1889 at English Bay is revisited. The 13 ft 6 in by 11 ft 6 in specimen supposedly weighed about a thousand pounds, with a 20 inch skull, prompting renewed notes on Alaska hunting history.

New Jail Goes Under Cover

A new reinforced concrete federal jail is being built with a wooden roof and walls to protect interior cement work from freezing and keep the roof dry during insulation and tar paper layers. Capt. W J Ashley notes the structure is for construction needs, not ceremonies, as windows and glass await shipment to Kodiak via small boats.

Hope Seen For End Of Tie Up

Reliable waterfront sources predicted a settlement of the 79 day old West Coast maritime strike may come before midnight Sunday. The CIO ship radio operators held the first bargaining session since the strike began. On the East Coast Federal mediator William Margolis said AFL dock workers talks open today and likely extend into next week. In Prince Rupert Governor Gruening forecast Alaska freight competition from Canada could ease the territory's recurring marine transport dilemma as Alaska seeks statehood.

Prize Girl Chosen To Give Award At Pot O Gold

Rena Corgatelli, daughter of Mr and Mrs Barney Corgatelli, will award prizes at the Pot O Gold program on Wednesday evening at the Orpheum. The 9 pm special closes the Kodiak Retail Liquor Dealers campaign for the Alaska Crippled Children Association. Rena was selected for the program for receiving treatment at 15 months old at Seattle Orthopedic Hospital. without it she would have been crippled. Local ACCA members will be at the Orpheum nightly through Wednesday to receive contributions from participants.

United Nations Reject Russian Arms Cut Demand

Britain and France rejected Moscow’s call for five major powers to cut armaments by one third at the United Nations. The United States labeled the plan most irresponsible and a cruel deception. John Foster Dulles warned U S troops remain about 12 percent of wartime strength while Russia holds roughly 55 to 85 percent. Britain deemed the plan unrealistic and France said it was developing.

Owners Buy Lots in Mission Road Land Sale at City Hall

Residents of the former rabbit reserve on Mission Road bid successfully at the Land Office sale. Most lots sold at minimum price, with two bidding against claimed improvements. High bidder Norman Fjeldheim paid 510 for Lot 7, Block 4, while total morning sales reached 9300 with 12 lots remaining.
