The Alaska National Guard unit Company D 207th Inf (NG) Battalion led by 1st Lt. Edward Pagano topped all Alaska Guard units at Camp Denali for attendance and efficiency. The Kodiak unit’s basketball team went undefeated to win the Camp Champs title and Pvt. Reynold Morris placed third in a small bore rifle match.

Jack Johnson Named Dock Superintendent in Kodiak
City Council appointed Jack V. Jackson, 29, as dock superintendent to succeed Harry Spencer who resigned earlier this month. A Kodiak resident since 1954, he has 12 years in maritime work, holds a 3rd class mate's unlimited license, and is a father of two. He was with Alvine and Gibson and formerly a mailboat Expansion crew member. Johnson assumed duties immediately after six applicants competed for the post.

Eskimos Honored For Airmen Rescue
Washington AP Two Alaska National Guard Scouts M Sgt Willis Walunga and Sgt 1st Class Clifford Iknikinok will be honored by the Navy for aiding the rescue of eleven airmen from a patrol plane shot down by Russian jets over the Bering Sea on June 22. The Neptune aircraft from Kodiak was fired on about 40 miles southwest of St. Lawrence Island. Three crew were wounded and three burned when it crash landed and exploded. The Eskimos, both fishermen on St. Lawrence Island, provided first aid and ferried the injured to a settlement. The ceremony is set for Monday.

Coast Air Crash Kills Twenty Seven Soldiers
A chartered Coast Air Transport liner crashed in a Seattle residential area early yesterday killing twenty seven soldiers. Forty seven survived and at least forty were injured. The plane struck a garage and ignited a house, five sleeping children untouched.
