Erskine's Collections To Be Auctioned Next Week

The late W. J. Eskine died Christmas Eve 1948. His executor Marshall Crutcher announces a public auction November 30 and December 2 at the former Erskine home in Kodiak. Items include ivory, Alaska baskets, pipes, furniture, china, tools, four Sidney Laurence paintings, uncatalogued books, and rare Alaska volumes. Heirs must bid along with the public. the house will return to Donnelley and Acheson by January 1.

Coast Guard Corpsman Performs Radio Guided Hand Surgery

A hospitalman aboard the Storis, guided by radio from a distant Navy surgeon, performed an on ship hand surgery after Donald G. Phillips severed his thumb. High winds halted a PBY airlift. the plane landed at Cold Bay then Kodiak for followup.

Thanksgiving Proclaimed for Thursday November 23 1950

President Truman designates November 23 1950 as Thanksgiving Day by proclamation. Acting Alaska governor Lew M Williams issues a parallel proclamation urging observance in line with the national request. The proclamation cites the 1941 joint resolution designating the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving.

Bob Hall an airline owner arrived as a PNA passenger last Friday after a brief trip to Anchorage. The report notes his return and identifies Hall with the local aviation business and his status as a PNA traveler.

Wind Tops Steel Tank Sparks West Coast Accident

Strong gusts over 60 knots toppled a wooden tool shack near Union Oil storage tanks at the Seattle city dock, injuring Robert Adams and trapping crewman Roy Deaver. Adams, 45, Seattle boilermaker, suffered multiple leg fractures and severe injuries. he was flown to Virginia Mason Hospital for treatment. E. L. Betty also injured a foot. The nearly finished tank, 36 feet high and 45 feet in diameter, was part of six storage tanks by Morris Knudsen Co. The collapse is blamed on wind suction and external pressure. Work resumed later as crews prepared to re erect the damaged tank.

Admiral Makes Historic Flight Over North Pole Route

Rear Admiral C A F Sprague, commander Alaskan Sea Frontier, was honorary commander of a modified B 29 for the 375th Weather Reconnaissance flight over the North Pole. The 375th WRS logged the anniversary flight on Nov 12, covering 3500 miles in 16 hours 5 minutes and landing at Lielson Air Base at 10 55 pm Monday. Adm Sprague is believed to be the first naval officer of his rank to take part in such a mission.

Local pilot M. F. Olee O Brien is due home today from Portland hospital where he was confined after his Taylorcraft crash near Big Lake this fall. The incident followed his release from medical care.

Meeting Postponed and Local Home Purchase Report

The Chamber of Commerce meeting set for Thursday is cancelled due to the holiday. The next meeting is scheduled for December 14. Mr and Mrs Milton Kaplan moved from Kodiak to Seattle this summer and have bought a home there at 751 88rd Street.
