Captain Walter Kraft of the 47th Infantry, reported somewhere in Germany, has received the Purple Heart and two Oak Leaf Clusters for wounds in France since the invasion. He entered service in 1942, first overseas in 1943, serving in North Africa, Sicily, and England before France. His letters describe continuous action, occasional shell fragment injuries, and accounts of combat life.

Coast Guard crew battles 60‑ft waves in hurricane

In a three day ordeal north of Cuba, Hurricane Four stormed a heavily loaded Coast Guard tanker as 60‑foot seas pummeled the vessel during 90‑mile winds. The crew members named from bottom to top are Coxswain Elwood Donahue of New Orleans, Coxswain Thomas Burroughs of Cranston RI, Seaman Nick Mustappa of Bellingham WA, and Warrant Boatswain Maurice Chaplin of Miami FL.

OPA Settles Erskine Suit Between W J Erskine Co and Dorothy Tyner

A settlement on OPA maximum price violations was reached in Anchorage. The W J Erskine Company paid 1750 dollars into the U S Treasury to settle a treble damage claim. The District Court was asked to dismiss the OPA action.

Royce Jackson of the Seattle War Labor Board region reports over $200 000 in dis allowances against 65 Alaska firms for wage stabilization rule violations. Many firms voluntarily stipulated illegal wage payments as employers raised wages to retain workers and meet payroll, driving price increases and inflation in interior Territory towns.

Sixth War Loan drive boosts Kodiak quota to 24000 dollars

The 6th War Loan runs from next Monday through December 16 with a 24000 dollar local quota for Kodiak. Of that total 15000 dollars are Series E bonds to emphasize individual purchases to support Alaska and the nation. Officials warn the war may extend as long as it has so far and require greater expenditures. More B 29s P 47s amphibious tanks carriers and fuel are needed, with current costs illustrating war expenses at about seven billion dollars monthly. Citizens are urged to buy at least one extra 100 War Bond.

New hospital chaplain arrives at Griffin Memorial

Father J. T. Walsh arrived yesterday to assume the role of hospital chaplain at Griffin Memorial, now run by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. He oversees Catholic services in Kodiak and will conduct the first service at the Orpheus Theatre on Sunday at 10 am. He previously served as chaplain at Providence Hospital in Anchorage.
