New Road Eases Traffic Near Mission Mill Bay

A connecting road between Mission and Mill Bay Road near Kodiak outskirts opened early this week. The 500 foot segment links Mill Bay Road and sixth street to the new school site, joining Mission Road near Jay Toelbert’s home. ARC crew widened sixth street and graded the route to relieve Alaska Way and Main Street congestion during rush hours, aiding Naval Station commuters from Mission Road to the base.

Military Exercise To Close Gate

Entrance to the Naval Station will be restricted to station employees for two days this week due to the Warm Wind maneuver. Travel will be limited to designated hours 6 to 8 am and 4 to 7 pm on Monday and Tuesday November 17 and 18. Pacific Northern Airline passengers will be exempted from the restrictions.

Chamber Hears LAC Report at Seward Luncheon

The Chamber of Commerce heard a report on the recent League of Alaskan Cities meeting in Seward. Mayor Lee Bettinger and Paul Dupler outlined organization details, pending bills for the 1953 Territorial Legislature, and plans for a full-time lobbyist. A Seattle labor dispute affecting Alaskan shipping and a message about Denali and Baranof cancellation were also discussed.

Library Desk At PTA Carnival For National Book Week

Kodiak Community Library sets up a desk at the PTA carnival Friday night to sell library cards and accept donations for new books. Staff seek children’s titles and adult books, with Mrs A Holmes Johnson noting the library will be closed Friday evening. Fred Solberg returned to town this week.

Skinner Cleared By Grand Jury

Kodiak jail guard Charles Skinner was cleared Thursday by the grand jury of assault with a dangerous weapon arising from an August incident involving prisoner Alex Mazoff. Five witnesses testified, including Mazoff, Milt Vokacek, Clifford Mowry, Lee Forrest, and Chief Deputy Marshal Ivan Blood. Blood led the original inquiry. the complaint was filed by Paul Dupler. Skinner posted $1,500 bond via Ben Kraft and appeared before Special Commissioner W. G. Ellis after U. S. Commissioner A. M. Vokacek disqualified herself due to a personal connection.

Fire damages ARD 31 on naval station barge

A small fire aboard the carpenter's barge ARD 31 moored beside the floating dry dock was extinguished quickly by the Naval Station fire department and the ship's crew. Seaman James E. Dodd was overcome by smoke but in good condition at Navy Hospital. Fire discovered at 11:50 pm by Seaman G. D. Canfield, who alerted the station. Damage described as negligible. an investigation will determine the cause.

Karl Brunstad of the Territorial Fisheries Board departs today for Jun eau for a week long annual meeting. The gathering runs November 17 through 22, with sessions and discussions on fisheries policy and management.

The Puget Sound stevedore dispute prompted Alaska Steamship Company to cancel the Baranof sailing from Seattle to Alaska. The Denali was laid up after a wage stabilization board issue and the Sailor's Union of the Pacific action. Kodiak merchants report depleted supplies after the last freighter’s stop. Bettinger named League lobbyist for the 1953 Territorial Legislature session after unanimous league approval in Seward.

Vandals Enter School Building

Vandals entered the school after 8 30 pm Thursday causing messes in several rooms. The fourth grade room window was used to enter the main building. Ink spilled, paint flung, drawers searched, violin cases opened, and a shop room pencil sharpener dumped. No major valuables taken. police and U.S. Marshal investigated. a light will be erected in the yard this week.

The Seattle Chamber of Commerce calls for reestablishment of the Alaska lifeline committee and warns the longshore foremen dispute could push steamship operators to base operations outside Seattle. Riley Appointed Secretary of Alaska

President Truman appoints Burke Riley of Juneau as secretary of the Territory of Alaska. Riley, 38, succeeds Joseph W. Kehoe who resigned. He has been governor’s administrative assistant and special assistant since 1947 and previously served as assessor for Fairbanks.
