Hughes Elected President of Kodiak School Board

John C. Hughes was elected president of the Kodiak Independent School District Board at its first meeting. Gene Marlar named secretary and Art Else treasurer. The board asked Victor Rivers to draw up a plat of the district area and will appoint an assessor when the plat is received.

Prize Adds $100 To Alaska Crippled Children Drive

A $100 prize will be awarded to a participant in the Retail Liquor Deal for the Alaska Crippled Children's Association. The drive ends with a 9 pm program on November 24 at the Orpheum Theatre. The winner must claim within 3 minutes or the $100 goes to the ACCA fund. The event aims to honor a child aided by ACCA funds.

Armistice Day Parade Observed In Kodiak

Kodiak marked Armistice Day with a servicemen and veterans parade in the morning and a full day holiday. Army navy and marines units participated along with the VFW auxiliary and American Legion. The march formed at Krafts, observed a minute of silence at 11, then proceeded to the post office where participants dispersed.

Edgar Brooker Dies In Sitka

Edgar Brooker died Tuesday at Sitka Pioneer's Home after moving there months ago. A Kodiak resident since 1900, he roamed Alaska chasing gold yet never grew rich, loved the state’s independence, and worked at a restaurant and later with Fisheries and Wildlife. He was 83 and survived by his wife Minnie and son Edgar Jr.

Bear Encounter on Armistice Day at Monashka Lake

Sammy Nelson son of Oscar Nelson and one of Kodiak’s fishing champs faced a black bear on Armistice Day while rabbit hunting with a friend. The bear snorted and approached. Sammy steadied under a tree, his 22 rifle with one clip left. The bear finally left without injury.

Fishermen Frolic Tonight at Community Center Carnival

Fishermen and town residents will enjoy an all indoor carnival at the BPW Community Center tonight. A 2:30 children’s carnival offers fish pond dart games with free admission, while evening events charge 25 cents and feature prizes such as savings bonds, silverware, a rifle, luggage, and home goods. Talks Held On Strike In San Francisco Waterfront

Employers and laborers hold daily negotiations to end a two month old waterfront strike. Dwight C. Steele leads the employers council talks as barge Lois Anderson sails in with supplies to Kodiak. Local merchants rely on air shipments and naval base aid for staples amid shortages.

No Trace Found In Navy Missing Planes Search

A week long air and water search for the navy Privateer missing since last Wednesday near Port Moller yielded no trace of the aircraft or its 12 crew. The Navy said the search would end yesterday. Also unresolved is the Pacific Alaska Air Express plane en route from Anchorage to Seattle which has not been found.

Center Officials To Meet

An important meeting of the board of directors of the Community Center will be held at the center Tuesday evening at 7 30 pm. Complete reports on the center s 194 financial campaign will be presented. Large contributions this week included 100 each from the Uganik Fisheries and the San Juan Fishing and Packing Up. The Program council will meet Monday evening at 7 30.
