Barn Dance Friday Eve To Benefit Community Chest
A Friday evening barn dance by the Kodiak Retail Liquor Dealers Association will raise funds for a community chest. Half the proceeds go to the chest, with 15 percent to Baptist Mission, 15 percent to Griffin Memorial Hospital, and 20 percent to the Alaska Crippled Children's Association. The event at the Kodiak Ice and Cold Storage Co. shed offers free transport from town stops and a discounted bus fare from the base. Admission is $1 with free entry for women and children.

Former Nazi Prisoner of War Becomes Russian Church Priest Here
The Very Rev. Alexander Popoff, newly arrived priest for the Russian Orthodox Church, said Good people live here and I could stay forever. He arrived September 18 from Europe after spending war years in Nazi prison camps. He spoke through an interpreter as he learns English and speaks Russian, Bulgarian, German and French. Born in Russia, he studied in Bulgaria and France, then served as priest in France before capture and detention in Lyon and Ludwigshafen. Liberated by the US Army, he served again as priest in the American zone of Germany before sailing with his family to New York aboard the General Muir on September 8 for a ten day voyage. His wife Raisa and children will join once funds are raised by Russian Church members.

The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce will push a small boat harbor plan. A committee led by Martin Jensen will contact small boat owners with a questionnaire. W G Ellis will seek cannery superintendent cooperation and write letters. Ellis questioned outside interest after 500 questionnaires yielded only 20 responses. Dr A Holmes Johnson sought outside capital to fund preservation, contacting William Randolph Hearst about financing a Kodiak museum and historic site work.

Smith Charged With Burglary
Robert Neil Smith, 17, faced burglary charges not involving a dwelling after police say he tried to enter a rear door of the Doghouse restaurant early Nov. 3 and was shot by owner Joe Raymond, who testified as the complainant. Smith was served the charge yesterday and remains hospitalized, reported to be alright. Doctor A Holmes Johnson removed a neck bullet Monday.

New ACS Station Nears Completion At Island Lake
Ten days after foundation work began the ACS concrete receiving station near Island Lake is nearly finished with walls and roof in place. Ralph Shupp notes wood forms will stay until the concrete sets. The two room building houses an emergency power unit and radio equipment. Captain L H Bucy says the station will be first of a series of unattended receiving sites. The old quonset hut will become a warehouse.

Two Injured By Helicopter Crash at Afognak Lake Base
A navy chief Lt. Gg. Henry M. Buerckholtz and apprentice seaman were seriously injured when a helicopter crashed on takeoff from the navy base at Afognak Lake. Aviation ordnance chief Jesse Leach Allen and seaman Dale A. Lynch were treated at the dispensary. injuries to others were minor. An investigation will determine the crash cause. A Coast Guard PBY with navy doctor aided the wounded. the helicopter has been stationed here since July.

March Commemoration in Kodiak Marks Armistice Day Silence
Kodiak observed Armistice Day with a minute of silence at 11 am after a parade led by service and veterans units and school children. Navy band played the national anthem, and a procession including army navy and marine units, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and auxiliaries, and Kodiak public school students proceeded to the bank.
