A Wednesday 7:30 pm gathering at the school Quonset hut will recruit teenagers to nominate candidates for a junior city council and mayor. WFW and Auxiliary support plus refreshments funded by VFW. Ballots and later election will choose a fire chief police chief board of education and other officials to serve briefly.
The Alaska Steamship Company case and five other anti trust actions are not to proceed to trial in Anchorage. Judge Anthony J. Dimond granted defense motions to transfer civil and criminal cases against USC to the western district of Washington.
Mrs Bill Wright of the Fish and Wildlife Office made a trip to Anchorage this week. Her travel noted in official records shows delegation and administrative duties linked to the agency’s field work.
The Coast Guard cutter Storis reached NOB on Thursday after sailing from Ketchikan and uses Juneau as its home base. Local rancher Tom Nelson, a PNA passenger, was seen in Anchorage on business this week.
Alaska Development Board reports charter meetings to form a statewide tourist association in Juneau and an Anchorage session planned for Monday. A citizen group name, charter, and temporary officers to be set, with Ray Martin of Club Liquor Store slated for Anchorage attendance. The effort follows moves by chambers of commerce and transport firms, with August visits by George Sundberg and former Hawaii bureau official George Armitage explaining the plan.
Former Kodiak resident L A DeCou died early this week at his Seattle home. He is survived by his wife, also a former Kodiak resident, with no children. The DeCous lived in Kodiak in 1946 47. he worked as a warehouseman for W J Erskine and as a civilian at NOB. Mrs DeCou was a Montmartre Inn bookkeeper. Funeral held yesterday afternoon.
The newly formed Catholic Ladies Guild will hold its first benefit party and dance Saturday evening Nov. 18 at the Elks Hall. Plans will be completed at the group’s next meeting Nov. 15 at Mrs. John C. Hughes home. The guild met this week at Mrs. Leon Johnson’s home.
Neil Sargent plane-lands in Kodiak Monday following several weeks abroad. Local officials expect him to address community concerns and provide updates on ongoing projects before resuming duties.
Mrs Dorian Coogan was listed as an incoming passenger for the PNA on Friday.
Two men with Lugers rushed Truman's home in a failed assassination bid. They were shot down. one attacker died, three guards were wounded with one later dying. White House police identified the assailants as Puerto Rican revolutionists Marion R. Preston and Oscar Olliskin. Truman appeared unruffled at a Thursday press conference.
Post office staff wrestled with over 20 tons of boat and air mail this week as Pacific Northern Airlines ran two flights on several days to handle the influx. Mail arrived from the Pomare and Alaska Steamship freighter Coastal Monarch, with boat mail unloaded on site.
Two prominent figures died this week. George Bernard Shaw, famed Irish playwright, aged 94, and King Gustaf V of Sweden, aged 92. Both left lasting legacies in literature and monarchy.
Charles Madsen left Sunday for Seattle to purchase material to repair his boat Kodiak Bear III damaged by a late September fire. Alvine and Gibson will perform the repairs, according to Madsen.
Ivor Schott school superintendent returned to Kodiak last Friday after attending his father’s funeral in McCune Kansas. He was notified of the death while at a conference in Juneau.
L K Wodlinger was re elected chair of the Ko diak American Red Cross chapter at its annual meeting. Marion Curtis was named chair of the new home service committee. Other officers include John Gibbons disaster relief Mrs Merrill Coon roll call Mary Jane Hurley safe ty and first aid Dr A Holmes Johnson Mrs Johnson Junior Red Cross Mrs Henry Neseth Thomas L Crooks and Mrs Henry Haag as treasurer and secretary.
Oscar Sackerson 70 a Kodiak resident for 11 years and Fort Greely employee died Thursday morning at Griffin Memorial Hospital after a brief admission. Born in Iron Mountain Michigan he traveled widely and worked as a hoisting engineer on the Panama Canal project and in Ft. Greely boiler room. He was a past member of the Elks and Masons and is survived by brother Charles of Cleveland. He never married. Funeral plans not yet set.
The Alaska Steamship Company freighter Coastal Monarch arrived in port Wednesday carrying freight and essential supplies for the town.
W E Red Thompson, a representative of Union Oil Company based in Anchorage, was in town this week visiting local officials and discussing regional energy matters.
Applications for individual subscriptions to the Blue Cross plan have been received at the hospital and further information may be obtained there.
Jack Frost arrives early as Kodiak sees snow and freezing temps. Residents bundle in parkas and mittens while warnings on frozen water lines spread via NOR radio. Thermometers report 20 to 34 degree readings, with one inch of snow at the naval base and Anchorage dipping to one degree above zero.
The case against Alfred Christofferson and two minors charged with stealing money from the T. T. Jackson home is continued indefinitely at the district attorney's recommendation. No action will be taken at this time. Christofferson, once held in jail, has been released.
The 1950 population of the United States was officially set at 150,697,361 by the Census Bureau. This marks a 14.5 percent gain over 1940, an increase of 19,028,086, and the largest rise ever recorded in the decennial census.
