Alaska Wins Statehood Bid In House Vote 208 to 166

The House approved Alaska as the 49th state by a 208 to 166 vote with 117 Democrats and 91 Republicans for statehood and 8 Democrats and 85 Republicans against. Amendments would broaden land grants, limit forest acreages, and require simultaneous voter approval on statehood. Senate fate deemed uncertain amid Southern opposition. Local Alaska delegation praised the outcome. supporters optimistic for White House passage.

Drilling Plans Approved by APW in City Water Plan

The Alaska Public Works Department approved a plan to conduct test well drilling to augment the city's water supply. John D. Argetsinger, acting director, said the department recommended relaxing Bond Ordinance No. 214 conditions to allow an $11,250 expenditure for the test well work.

Council Awards Fuel Contracts to Two Firms

City awarded contracts for delivery of gasoline diesel fuels and heating oils. Thompson Transfer won the heating oils contract on the lowest bid while Standard Oil was chosen for fuels after a secret ballot with 4 to 1 voting in favor of Standard.

Crane Accident Claims Life of Jerry Dodd in Ketchikan

William C. Jerry Dodd aged 35 was killed when a portable crane cable broke during removal of a 12 inch water main in Ketchikan. He died on arrival at Ketchikan General Hospital. Survived by widow Phyllis and a 15 month old daughter. Dodd formerly lived in Kodiak and worked as a construction superintendent and trouble shooter for Macri Construction on the project. He had just returned from six weeks in South America for the company.

U S Naturalization Ceremony Tuesday in Anchorage

The U S District Courtroom in the Post Office building hosts a naturalization ceremony Tuesday at 2 p.m. Six Kodiak residents will be admitted to citizenship: William Steve Koumainus, Una Malutin, Harald Martin Hundhammer, Alois Kopun, Nadia Kopun, and Natalina Hobson. An Immigration officer assists June 9 and 10. Judge J L McCarrey presides. mayoral direction by Coon. The court’s sessions begin Monday at 3 p.m. with ten cases, including two divorces and one separate maintenance.

Seven Men Appointed To New Kodiak Planning Committee

A seven man planning and zoning commission, appointed by Mayor Coon, met with council approval at the last meeting. Kincaid Brecken Brooks serve three years. Deveau Root two years. Johnson Gronlund one year. A Kodiak building code may be drawn up later. council was asked to send a delegate to Anchorage July 24 and 25 for building meetings.

City Council Adopts Ordinance Banning Switch-blades

City council adopts ordinance No 224 banning sale and carry of switch blade knives and consolidating eighteen ordinances on misdemeanors. Council also approves land vacation requests by Standard Oil and Donnelley and Acheson with no opposition. Meeting notes include street vacation consideration for Kodiak Townsite area and a request for alternate tax assessment methods on properties along Tagura Road.

Plans announced for Kodiak Fourth of July celebration

The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July committee unveiled plans for a historic celebration led by Dr. Bob Johnson. Highlights include a Queen and Princess contest with six entrants each, a 12:30 p.m. banquet at the Town Club, a 16-foot Birchcraft cruiser giveaway, and a soap box derby. Master of ceremonies will be Jules Radinsky, with entries for floats and marching units coordinated by Pete Ramaglia.

Richard Rowland Joins Local FWS Office as Assistant Agent

Richard G. Rowland is named the new assistant FWS agent here joining Charles Connelley. Rowland arrives with his wife and child and will be stationed permanently. He hails from Washougal Washington and previously worked with the Skamania Fish Hatchery and has experience in Bristol Bay and other parts of Alaska.

Edson Fadnoff, 34, a fisherman, is missing from his boat tied to ALF-JIM near Hafertys cannery as police investigate since his wife Mary notified them at 8 45.
