Kodiak Telephone owner Martha Cushing told the council the company will add many lines phones and hire an information girl to answer calls from 9am to 6pm. She cited volcanic ash as a factor and discussed rate changes, equipment costs and future housing project needs.
Miss Virginia Foster works half days at Bert's Drug Store this summer, balancing work with personal commitments while the store operates through the season.
Memorial Day was observed with a town parade and services at Kodiak Naval Station. A 21-gun salute and dockside ceremony followed, with Naval Station and Fort Greely units including a Marine platoon led by Lt Fritz Volz and a Navy band under G L Briley. VFW ritual services occurred at the cemetery, with a bugler salute and flowers cast on the water. The VFW Auxiliary Drum and Bugle Corps, led by Paul Swanson, joined the parade with local schoolchildren participants.
The Kodiak Independent School District set a 1952-53 budget at 139,390 dollars, about 8,000 more than last year. Superintendent Ivor Schott presented the plan to the city council for approval of the city portion totaling 32,307.97 dollars. Council unanimously approved after Basil Clark supported the recommendation. The increase covers another room and higher teacher salaries.
The Afognak Island Elk Hunt will run Oct 1 to 15 under U S Fish and Wildlife Service supervision. Thirty five permits will be issued by drawing as in 1950, with no hunt in 1951. Applications must reach Kodiak by August 10. a $15 fee is charged after selection.
Federal conciliators had no immediate plans for talks to end the West Coast AFL sailors strike. Picket lines at Pacific ports halted at least 23 ships as sailors walked off Friday after a wage and overtime demand was rejected. Kodiak agent for Alaska Steamship Co reported cancellations for the Denali sailing on June 4 and 18. the ship has not been in port since last fall.
Naval Station School Superintendent Donald Lawvere and Mrs Lawvere intend to depart this weekend for Matthews Indiana. Lawvere stated his plans for the coming year are indefinite.
Dr. A Holmes Johnson urged Kodiak residents to intensify efforts against Weils disease. Officials warned military personnel to chlorinate or boil private water supplies after three new cases appeared at the Naval Station Hospital.
