Bettinger Buys Coca Cola Plant From Odom

Bettinger purchases Coca Cola bottling plant from Odom Co. and plans to operate both Kodiak Bottling Works and the new plant on Marine Way. Joe Morino will manage the operation while some equipment is returned to Anchorage. Milcom Odom arranged the sale. Morino travels to Barbanks for further formalities.

Bell's Milk Is OK Again

Navy health officers declared Bell's Dairy milk compliant again after nearly halting base commissary sales due to earlier contamination findings. A Navy sample of the dairy's milk failed to meet standards this week and the sanitation office would not specify the initial issue. The product has since been retested and now meets requirements, with sales to resume at the base and town pending official notice.

Ed Brooker Goes To Pioneer Home

Edgar Brooker a Kodiak Island pioneer and long time Sid Old's ranch resident left this week for Sitka Pioneers Home. At eighty he had recently been in good health but spent several days in the hospital after a period of illness.

Kodiak Seeks Independent School District Vote Sept 7

Residents in the Kodiak area will vote September 7 on forming an independent school district. Five directors will be elected if the majority approves. Judge Joseph Kehoe ordered the election following a citizen petition. Eligible voters must be Alaska residents for one year, 21 years old, and literate in English. Max Lalande, Killen Vawson, and John A Gibbons were appointed to supervise and appoint election officers. Attorney John Hughes will post election orders 30 days prior. Citizenship papers were granted to Joe Finderle, Helen Beukers, and Richard Haugen before the floating court left Koulak.

Chamber Proposes Westward Boat Service Move

Chamber of Commerce members plan to urge the Interior Department for a larger boat service appropriation to the westward. At Thursday’s meeting they decided to cooperate with Rotary on the July 4 festivities and note current passenger service to the chain is lacking for medical, law enforcement, and other travelers. The Flemish Knot Sail from Seattle to Alaska

The terse note says a vessel named The Flemish Knot will sail from Seattle with Coe Liles aboard bound for Thodiak. The plan includes a port stop at Jute 10 and involves an Alaska seam feeboer.

Knute Thevik a Kodiak resident for almost ten years died Tuesday evening at his home after a long illness Funeral services are set for 2 o clock this afternoon at Community Baptist Church Thevik born in Norway in 1871 came to the United States in 1901 settling in Minnesota He worked as a jumbo man then moved to the west coast In 1918 he went to Petersburg and in 1919 to Kodiak He visited Seattle briefly since arriving He was a fisherman until illness Surviving are his son John of Kodiak and a nephew Robert Berg of Bend Oregon.

Bids Rejected for City Hall and Draft Board Buildings

At a special council meeting on Thursday evening bids by Ralph Schupp for the city hall and draft board buildings offering five dollars each were rejected. Pat Lynch was hired to move the draft board to the far end of the lot and the city hall to the school ground on a labor and material cut basis.

Veterans Groups Plan Weekend Observances

Veterans auxiliaries from the American Legion and the VFW organize a Saturday sale of buddy pop pies starting at 10 am, plus veterans flowers sold yesterday. Greely Soldier Hangs Self at Fort Greely

Charles Ford a soldier recently assigned to Fort Greely died by hanging at the army post this week. He was 18 years old and had come to Kodiak within the past month. No further details were available from the army.

Alf Madsen returned from the fal spnog hunt with Mr and Mrs Floyd Johnson of Pueblo Colo John son shot a 10 ft 5 in tears no his wife an 8 ft 6 in Madsen reported he saw 2 bears fighting the first time he has ever seen that He said the female gave the male one wallop on the head that sent him rolling Alf also brought with him the shell that saved his life on a previous hunt when he was unexpectedly charged by a bear which he shot from 20 ft His rifle was unloaded but he got the shell in time and saved his life.
