Rotary club organizers announce a big Fourth of July program with a carnival the largest in years. A 1950 Plymouth sedan may be driven home as grand prize along with two additional prizes. Proceeds fund the Rotary playground and community center operations.
A three year old girl named Rena Shaw wandered from home and was found near a street by Alfred Tennison, a Telephone Company manager. She was briefly held at the U S Federal jail after police identified her through questions and calls. Mother Mrs L B Shaw retrieved her after she visited with gum and reported no serious distress. Earlier, Mrs Jack Mann and her children visited Mr and Mrs Ben Kraft.
Local postmaster Maurice Briggs warns parents to supervise children who tamper with lobby mailboxes. Boxes at seven to eight year olds’ reach have been opened and mail scattered. He notes staff have seen kids twist dials and try to access boxes, risking reports to the U.S. Marshal if incidents continue.
The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce endorsed HR 331 and pledged support for the Statehood Bill. About fifty Alaskans traveled to Washington for hearings, and the CofC sent a telegram to the committee and Delegate Bartlett. No decision yet on post office service suspension. a one year contract exists but termination date undisclosed.
Thomas A. Miles was acquitted on a larceny charge after admitting he had no checking account and had written three checks totaling 35 dollars to the Idle Hour Bar. The jury deliberated ten minutes. his attorney contended the checks were IOUs and not an attempt to defraud. Miles paid the $35 the day the complaint was filed.
The Emblem Club meets at 3 o clock today at the Elks Lodge with all members urged to attend. Mrs Hedley Johnson is named chaplain of the women's group replacing Mrs Joe Henry as previously announced.
Mrs Ray Shannon came back Thursday evening after several weeks with relatives in the states, ending her travels and resuming home routines.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7056 plans a Memorial Day parade in Kodiak with VFW Auxiliary Marines Army firing squad Navy band and Boy Scout units marching. Services at the cemetery Donnelley and Acheson dock follow a 10 45 a m line up and 11 am start with a moment of silence. John Drewes urges members to assemble at 9 am for briefing and open house afterward.
A National Labor Relations Board conciliator will sit in on talks in Kodiak between the Alaska Salmon Industry and United Fishermen of Alaska. Cordova prices for 1950 equal 1949 levels with reds 80 cents, pink 30 and chum 40. Local fishermen seek parity with Cordova rates. The 1950 season opens June 6 as boats and gear are prepared.
Two car crashes were reported to the U S Marshal service between 5 and 5 30 pm Thursday. A vehicle driven by Mark Hartley age 17 with passengers Shirley Lauson and June Herrington left the road at the Y end of Mill Bay road around 5 pm. A later collision on Mission Rd involved a truck driven by Bill Sargent and a 1950 Ford driven by a naval lieutenant. All three vehicles suffered considerable damage.
Mr and Mrs E A Metzker and two children returned on the Denali this week after more than a year in the states. Mrs Metzker is the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Worth.
