Bubendorf Resigns and Vokacek Appointed to Posts

Gilbert W. Bubendorf the U S Commissioner for two years resigns due to ill health. Anna May Vokacek becomes secretary in his office and is named justice of the peace ex officio recorder coroner and probate judge. Dimond announced the appointments in Anchorage. Vokacek previously served as chief deputy clerk and will move her office to a new building. Bubendorf will remain Northern Airlines agent continue accounting work and retain the city magistrate role.

Welfare officials visit to review local schools

Dr. Dorothy Novatney educational supervisor and Mrs. Margaret Hafemeister of the Department of Public Welfare arrived for an inspection with the school board and Superintendent Tom Utterback. Hafemeister warned the next year’s finances look tight and urged recognition of welfare work to pressure the next legislature for funds.

Gail Blankenburg National Winner in Fashion Contest

Gail Blankenburg, a high school junior, won first place in a nationwide Simplicity Pattern Personal Portrait Notebook contest open to students across the states and Alaska. Her maroon corduroy raincoat design and class portrait, photographed by Margo Lester Studio, will be publicized by trade magazines with her teacher Mrs. Georgya Ellis directing the entries.

Skinner Lashes Back At Gruening

Washington Alaska Steamship Co president Gilber W Skinner denied dictating freight rates and accused Governor Ernest Gruening of misrepresenting facts. Gruening testified Skinner owns 3 percent of Alaska Pacific Salmon Co which accounts for 4 percent of Alaska salmon pack. Gruening urged consolidation of Alaska Steamship Co and Northland Transportation Co due to limited fleet.

Father King Loses Suit and Navy Policy Meeting in Kodiak

Businessmen of Kodiak hosted Lee Bettinger at a Chamber of Commerce dinner where he outlined efforts with L. Norman to press navy and congressional officials for local changes. Judge Kehoe ruled Father King lost a $21,000 rent suit against the American Legion, saying proof of ownership was insufficient. three divorces were granted, naturalization hearings set, and an independent school district election ordered.

Clean Up Push Debris Cleans City Streets

Fifty five truckloads weighing over 100 tons were carted to the city dump in a spring house cleaning sponsored by the City Council Chamber of Commerce and Community Center. Two trucks worked all week with 40 youths, finishing Mission road by yesterday afternoon and leaving only Tagutard and a few spots. If debris remains, call Ken Wade at the center 3222 by Monday evening. Airplane rides for four hard working kids will be announced next week with other awards funded by donors Tommy Gallagher John Gibbons and Father Louis B Fink.

Truman Pushes Alaska Statehood Plan to Congress

President Truman sent a five point program to Congress for Alaska’s development and immediate admission as a state after more than 35 years of territorial government. The plan calls for better transportation, housing and community facilities, native lands, and settlement encouragement.

Hansen's Body Recovered From Erkine Dock

The body of Hjalmar Hansen, a halibut boat cook who disappeared from Erkine's dock last week, was found Monday morning floating near a pile at the dock. A coroner's jury ruled he died accidentally by drowning.
