Graduation Tuesday at Orpheum Theatre ceremony

Seventeen seniors will receive diplomas at 8 pm with Miss Frost valedictorian and Ed Naughton salutatorian. Eighth graders will also graduate, with 23 students advancing to high school. Commencement address by Father Louis B Fink, diplomas by Mrs. Mark Meyer, and a baccalaureate tomorrow at 1 pm featuring Rev Rowland N Wilkinson. Junior prom wrapped the year at the Community Center.

Power Barge Tootsie Rescued After Ice Collision

The Coast Guard cutter Bittersweet reached the icebound power barge Tootsie near Port Heiden in Bratel Bay and took her in tow. The Tootsie, a fishing boat for Egegik Packing Co, had left Pt Heiden a month ago for the north with thirteen aboard, all reported safe after days in ice.

GI Bodies To Go Home Disinterment Starts In Alaska

Hot Scoop Sparks Wild Fire Truck Chase

John Gibbons blamed for dumping burning garbage into his truck. He sped to the fire hall as Tiny Tesurik, police chief, chased in a police car. The fire was extinguished and no ticket issued for speeding.

Bears From Kodiak Headed To Cincinnati Zoo

Three seven week old Kodiak cubs were brought to town by Charles Madsen on his return from Alaska. The cubs will be flown to the Cincinnati Zoo. Madsen also returned with two satisfied bear hunters. A Denver man presented a foot bear to the Denver Museum. Another rancher from Loveland captured a 10 ft 6 in bear. This was the pair’s second Alaska trip. They filmed their hunt and captures, including seals and sea lions.

Clean-up Campaign Next Saturday

The Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a city-wide clean up drive next Saturday joining with the community center which had planned a campaign around its grounds. Dr. A Holmes Johnson will be chairman and Ken Wade will organize youngsters to assist. All residents urged to prepare premises and have rubbish ready for collection.

Hearing on Aleutian bases seeks time limits and protections

The Juneau hearing led by Assistant Interior Secretary William Warne examined the Navy and Army request for an extensive Aleutian base network including parts of Kodiak Island. Participants urged resource conservation, time limits on reservations, and wildlife and grazing rights while noting national defense needs. Warne kept the record open for ten days for additional petitions to Washington.

ACL Man Top Bowler Joe Maher Wins Elimination Title

Joe Maher of ACS won the single elimination tournament at Kodiak Bowling Alley defeating Rudy Anderson of B B team in the final. Stan Nelson beat Hank Gonzales 768 to 658 to take second place. Mother's Day couples event set for tomorrow with eight matches at 1 pm and 2 15 pm, leading to a 9 pm final.
