1960 King Crab Festival Opens in Kodiak Harbor

The 1960 King Crab Festival kicks off at Kodiak Small Boat Harbor with skin diving, midway attractions, a children's parade, and a crab judging contest offering $50 prizes. Russians Build Big Fishing Fleet in Bering Sea

Alaska witnesses Herb Hirscher of Anchorage and Ralph S. Jones of Kodiak report a large Russian fishing fleet of 58 boats in midsea between the Pribilofs and the mainland. U S ships withdrew 30 miles off the Alaska Peninsula due to Russian operations using long tangle nets. Senator Magnuson calls the incident potentially most serious and seeks talks with Russia and Japan.

Cap Squadron On Field Trip

Cadets and officers of the Ko diak Patrol Squadron on a field trip on May 1 visited Chiniak Air Force Base hosted by Major Fred Shipley commander and James Paris station manager for Lockheed. About twenty cadets and seniors toured the Air Force Tracking Station, enjoyed a lunch films and a dinner.

Nine seek Senate and House seats in Alaska races

Nine candidates filed for the Alaska Senate and for House seats in the coming August primary. Incumbent Sen. Al Owencent, and Rep. Pete Deveau seek reelection as Democrats, while Emil Knudsen runs for Senate. Other Democratic candidates include Chuck Weir, Fred Brechan, Eudora Preston, Gil Jarvella. A Holmes Johnson runs as Republican. Martin McKneally to visit five Alaska cities May 18 to 21 starting in Ketchikan as National Commander of the American Legion.

Museum Extends Hours for King Crab Festival Night

The Kodiak and Aleutian Historical Society announces extended museum hours aligned with the King Crab Festival. The museum will stay open Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 30 to 9 p m and Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p m to accommodate festival visitors. Don Clark, president, notes the extra hours aim to give guests more time to explore the exhibits.

Naval District invites bids on two contracts at Kodiak

The 17th Naval District Public Works Officer issued invitations to bid on two informal contracts at the U S Naval Communication Station Kodiak Alaska. Contract No 604 covers installing about 300 feet of electrical ground conductors in three CCL towers and a 280 foot walkway over gravel built up roofing. Bidding data available from the Public Works Officer Box 38 Kodiak. Sealed bids in triplicate will be opened at 3 p.m. AST on 19 May 1960.

High School Musical Concert Showcases 240 Students

A spring concert at Kodiak High School Tuesday May 10 features 240 students from grade schools and the high school in instrumental and choral performances under Gary Benson. Senior Band and Chorus numbers include Sousa and Rodgers Harris works with solos by Douglas Dawson and a finale “Alaska's Flag.”
