Registration By F W S Began Last Wednesday

Area licensing for 1956 of all boats and fishermen began last Wednesday per Rev. A Indsley of the Fish and Wildlife Service. Licensing covers salmon nets in Alaska waters and allows taking in only one district. Boat and fishermen cards issued. hardship provisions and mail applications noted. Continued in column.

Kodiak May Be Site For Fish Program

A four year Alaska fish rehabilitation program may start in 1957 with a $3 million budget. Senator Magnusen indicated potential $700,000 from Saltonstall Act funds, plus predator control measures. Initial Kodiak Afognak Island area tasks include predation control, feeding Red salmon, and starting lake rehabilitation projects at Kitoi Bay and nearby sites. A portable hatchery would serve the Kodiak Afognak area with capacity for four to eight million fry.

Richard Crittenden Returns to Kodiak Worked on Pipelines

Richard Crittenden, formerly of Kodiak and once Quarterman at the Pipe Shop on the Naval Station, arrived from Bremerton Washington. He has worked for Lentz Plumbing and Heating and on various projects across the states including the big pipeline at Haines. He will travel to Chiniak for a week then to Sitkinak for a construction job while his family stays in Bremerton.

Baptist youths visit Ouzinkie despite fog bound trip

Members of the Junior Hi and Senior Hi Fellowships of the Baptist Church traveled to Ouzinkie by Alf Anders on a boat. Fog forced them to stay all night. Some flew from Kodiak on Monday and Wednesday others returned by boat. Reverend Molletti calls it the longest afternoon trip on record.

Huge Sum Asked in NS Libel Suit

Three libel actions totaling over 750000 were filed in District Court on May 3 against Capt. W. M. Crane, commanding officer at Kodiak Naval Station. Plaintiffs Elizabeth L. Hardin, Shirlee A. Wick, and Peggy J. Shreve seek damages for defamation over a March 26 1956 Notification of Personnel Action alleging misappropriation of property and dismissal. Each woman, mothers and base commissary workers, claims the publication harmed reputation and livelihood. Attorney John Mansuy noted the plaintiffs seek to clear their names and prevent future employment bans.

Health Center Closed Two Weeks After Nurse's Father Dies

The Kodiak Health Center will suspend operations for two weeks after Mrs. Roger Clough, the in charge nurse, is called to Detroit where her father passed away. She will attend a Mental Hygiene Workshop in Anchorage from May 14 to 18 and plans to return before the center reopens on May 21.

Water Restored as Tap Water Declared Drinkable

City Health Officer Dr A Holmes Johnson announced water in the reservoir and tank is fit to drink and residents may stop boiling. The dorinator is working and pumping from the lakes has ceased. Eddie Pagano returned this week from the States.

Baby Show Set for Tomorrow at Orpheum Theatre

A capacity crowd is expected as the annual Baby Show hosted by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary runs at the Orpheum Theatre Sunday. Trophies are on display at the Bank of Kodiak Insurance Office all week. Kings and Queens will be chosen in three divisions with many prizes. Judges include Adm. Kenneth Craig Howard Demarest and R D Bettinger.

Kodiak Chamber Outlines Position on Rentals Tax

A Kodiak Chamber committee met with Admiral Kenneth Craig and Captain W M Crane to discuss a proposed sales tax on rental items. Navy officials say the tax would burden personnel and affect operations, while the chamber favors taxing all rentals but may drop the rental portion after further hearings.

Waterfront Buzz as Salmon Season Opens on the River

The week builds toward the salmon season with fishermen regis tering, boats painted, and cannery workers arriving at agreed wage scales. Lloyd Cannon on the Juneau landed 2027 King crab weighing 18 617 pounds, GPC 19 brought 436 crab at 5 090 pounds, Cory Karlstad ships live tanks toward Seattle but may process locally, and Bill Dikus readies a Seattle built boat for Uganik. The City Dock sees big freight shipments as the Expansion and Fireball Thomsen remain active skippers amid shifting markets.

Explorer Sea Scouts Attend Regional Regatta in Seattle

Local Explorer Sea Scouts Ship 726 sponsored by Kodiak Rotary Club will travel by air and train to Whittier and Seattle to attend Region 11 Regatta May 25 26 27. They will tour Naval installations ride ships and boats and participate in knot tying ring toss heaving lines and other events. Estimated cost is 35 per scout with a June 5 return aboard M S T S.
