ACCA Easter Seal Campaign Starts This Week in Alaska
ACCA Fund Drive begins Tuesday and runs to April 18 led by Mrs J J Springhill president of the local chapter. Seals mailed from Anchorage headquarter and placed in local post office boxes to raise funds for Mount Edgecumbe Hospital and to support handicapped residents. The 1952 seals are green and purple and a letter urges using the seals on letters to draw attention to the drive.

Fisher ies Board Elects New Head Juneau Alaska
J P Valentine of Ketchikan was chosen chairman of the Alaska Fisheries Board at the opening session of its week long meeting in Juneau. The board includes Karl Brunstad Kodiak W O Smith Ketchikan and Ira Rothwell Cordova. They will review division reports and seek to avoid duplications with U S Fish and Wildlife Service. The Elizabeth fishing boat owned by John Malutin broke moorings and drifted onto a reef below the Halferty Cannery causing heavy bottom damage. Workmen awaited high tide to refloat and tow the vessel for repairs.

Outboard Fails as Hunter Rows Home in 12 Mile Row
John Chya set out from Kodiak at 2 pm in a 14 foot skiff with a kicker to hunt seals in Middle Bay. After hours of hunting the outboard would not start and a wind pushed the boat toward rocks, forcing him to row 12 miles home despite rough seas.

City Chooses Judges and Clerks for Territorial Primary

Chamber Seeks Land for Miller Point Park Plan
The Chamber of Commerce urges the city council to petition the Bureau of Land Management in Anchor age for 800 acres in the Miller Point area including Fort Abercrombie. The land sits under Defense Department jurisdiction and could become a park or municipal reserve. Deputy Marshal Clarence Dizney warned of ongoing thefts of property from the area and said the U.S. Attorney’s Office would prosecute. John Gibbons, speaking at the Montmartre Inn luncheon, noted the Elks Club’s interest in a Boy Scout playground or camping site.

Two Nelson Sergeants Home After 80 Day Leave
Sergeants Jack and Archie Nelson, sons of Mr and Mrs Oscar Nelson of Kodiak, return home for an 80 day furlough from the Army after three years in occupied Germany. Ages 22 and 21, they reenlisted last September. They served with a tank outfit, spent most time in Regensburg, and have orders to report to Fort Lewis Washington for reassignment. This is their first return to Kodiak since 1948.

Navy Houses Open For Families
Four units of Kodiak Naval Station housing were occupied this week as eight enlisted men's families moved in. Construction began last September by Haddock McClure Gerwice Swinnerton Construction Co. The rest of the units will open soon with plans by the 17th ND Public Works FB.

Garland in Storm Heads to Kodiak for Repairs
The 5382 ton Garland bound for Seward Kodiak and Aleutian villages limped into Alitak Bay after battling high winds and heavy seas. With 27 crew and passengers aboard, the vessel radioed for help and Coast Guard units at Kodiak and the CGC Clover escorted it to Kodiak for urgent repairs.

Ski Jump Plane Loses Engine Needing Arctic Support
A four engine Navy transport aircraft with crew and tools from Fleet Air Squadron 114 flew to Point Barrow to aid Ski Jump after a Neptune patrol bomber lost an engine while attempting to establish station number two. Rear Admiral E A Cruise, in charge of Alaskan Sea Frontier operations, ordered the relief flight following Cmdr W J Coley request. The Neptune later landed on an ice island while chasing the R4D flying lab.
